Northern Colorado fell to CSBU 10-1 Saturday night to claim the series win
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield took game two of the three-game series against Northern Colorado Saturday night 10-1 with a pair of three plus run innings. The Roadrunners were able to string together 15 hits to take down the Bears.
How It Happened
Following a strike out to begin the day at the plate for Bakersfield, the team used a single and triple to take the earlier lead in the bottom of the first. They made it a 3-0 through two with a pair or productive outs in the second on a ground out and sacrifice fly to bring home the runs.
Northern Colorado, put a run on the board in the fourth, as Cole Maltese reached base on a one out double. Senior Dan Reese brought him home with a two out, RBI double to cut the game to 3-1.
CSUB responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 6-1 game.
In the top of the fifth, Northern Colorado had a prime opportunity to get back in the game when they loaded the bases with no outs. Tyler Yamaguchi singled to start the inning when Nick Tanner and Alex Kiel loaded them up with a single to right, and Kiel reaching on an error for CSUB. The Roadrunner defense buckled down retiring the next three hitters in order to end the threat.
UNC stranded a pair in both the seventh and eighth inning, while Bakersfield added on four insurance runs in the seventh.
Game Changer
Third baseman Malik Jones came up with the play that started a key sequence in the game between UNC and CSUB. He cut down the runner at home in Cole Maltese as UNC had the bases loaded with no outs. A fly out and strike out ended he inning for Northern Colorado as they looked to start a comeback.
Notable
- Outfielder Jack Pauley had a strong day at the plate for UNC, going 3-for-5 with no runs scored and no RBIs.
- Northern Colorado had its fair share of shots to keep the game close, stranding 12 runners in the game.
