@NCBearsBaseball Earns Extra Inning Win Over UT Rio Grande Valley
5/12/2017 10:19:00 PM | Baseball
Northern Colorado baseball defeated UTRGV in 10 innings 6-5.
How It Happened
UT Rio Grande Valley opened its time in the batter's box with a two-out double by Joseph Collazo, ending up on third after an error on the play by Jack Pauley. Jose Garcia drove him home with a single to make it a 1-0 game after one.
The Vaqueros added to their lead in the second with a pair of runs to make it 3-0.
Northern Colorado pulled out in front in the third with a two-out rally. The inning was extended as Alex Kiel and Jack Pauley reached on a hit by pitch and an error by second baseman, Austin Siener. Cole Maltese drove home the first two runs of the game for UNC with a two-RBI single to center field.
Brett Minnick kept the rally going with a double, placing runners on second and third. Evan Johnson then put the Bears ahead 4-3 with a single to left bringing home Maltese and Minnick.
UNC added to its lead in the fourth as Dean Lawson doubled to lead off the inning. He advanced to third on a wild pitch with Tyler Yamaguchi at the plate. Yamaguchi continued the at-bat by knocking in Lawson with a ground out to short.
UTRGV chipped away at the UNC advantage with runs in both the fourth and sixth to even the game at six apiece.
Both teams looked to break the tie in the final three scheduled innings, but nothing came of it, pushing the game into extras.
In the top of the 10th, Minnick extended the inning with a two-out single through the left side. He was lifted for a pinch runner in Issac Bracken. The speed of Bracken proved to be important, as he came around all the way from first to score when Evan Johnson smoked a ball to deep center field breaking the tie.
Jacob Howard came in for Dylan Shiraki looking for the save. After a strikeout swinging to start the inning, UTRGV's leadoff hitter Conrad McMahon tripled with one out, putting pressure on the Bears. Northern Colorado was able to work its way out of the jam as Anthony Gomez was called out on batter's interference on a squeeze attempt.
Howard slammed the door shut on the game with his second strikeout on Joseph Collazo.
Game Changer
As is with any game in extra innings, one swing of the bat can change the outcome of a game. For Northern Colorado it came from Evan Johnson with two-outs in the 10th. His well hit ball to center field scored Issac Bracken from first base pushing across the would be game-winning run.
Notable
- The extra innings game was the fourth of the season for Northern Colorado. The win moved their record to 2-2 in those contests.
- Evan Johnson had a big day for Northern Colorado going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. His hit in the third gave UNC the 4-2 lead, and then drove home the game-winning run in the 10th.
- The Bears pitching staff did a good job of stranding 14 UTRGV runners.

Game two of the series between the Bears and Vaqueros is set for 5 pm MT. Aaron Hamilton will take the mound for UNC.
