GREELEY, Colo. – UNC Athletics announced the promotion of Ben Gendron to head coach of the men's tennis program. Gendron served as the interim head coach for the 2016-2017 season. He was named the interim head coach in August 2016 after spending the 2015-16 season with the team as a volunteer assistant.
The Bears showed a pleasing performance under Gendron with six straight match victories midway through the season. The most impressive match came on February 10th with a 5-2 win against Montana. It was UNC's first win over Montana as a Division I program.
"Over this past season, Coach Gendron has brought a new energy to our men's tennis program," Director of Athletics Darren Dunn said. "As one of the best Division I tennis players in UNC's history, his connection with this program makes him a great fit. His knowledge of the game, tremendous drive and commitment will help this team compete for championships. I am extremely pleased that Coach Gendron will remain on our staff."
Before coaching, Gendron had an excellent playing career with the Bears as he earned Big Sky Conference awards all four years. His highest honors in the Big Sky came his senior year with a First Team All-Conference nod as UNC's No. 1 singles player.
"I am absolutely honored and excited to have the opportunity to continue to lead the Men's Tennis program at the University of Northern Colorado," said Gendron. "I would like to thank Darren Dunn and the rest of administration for this fantastic opportunity and the support they have given me through the past year. I see a tremendous amount of potential in the program and it is an exciting time to be a part of Bears Tennis! Go Bears!"
Gendron earned a degree in Sports and Exercise Science Major with a concentration in PE K-12 teaching while at UNC.
