UNC lost to Utah Valley 6-1 in the series opener on Friday/Saturday.
GREELEY – Northern Colorado and Utah Valley completed their series opening game Saturday afternoon, with U// coming out victorious /-/. The game which began Friday, saw a 1 hour 13 minute weather delay and then was halted due to weather later on leading to the final / innings being played Saturday.
How It Happened
With the cooler temperatures and wind blowing in during most of the game, starters Connor Leedholm and Jackson Cofer matched zeros through the first four inning.
UVU's bats came around in the fifth though, after UNC had a long bottom of the fourth in which Leedholm was in the dugout for almost 20 minutes as the Bears stranded two during it. The fifth began with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch put both runners in scoring position.
Tyler Yamaguchi made a nice play on a grounder, to cut down the runner at home for a fielder's choice and first out of the inning. Despite the big play by Yamaguchi, UVU went on to have its next four batters reach safely with two singles, a walk and fielder's choice, before the game went into a delay due to weather for 1 hour and 13 minutes and Utah Valley up 3-0.
When the team's returned to the field Jacob Howard took over on the bump for Northern Colorado inheriting a two out runners on first and second situation. The Wolverines extended the inning with a walk and two-run scoring single to be up 5-0 when the inning ended.
Utah Valley added to its lead in the sixth with a run, while UNC stranded two more in the bottom of the sixth and seventh before the game was halted until Saturday afternoon due to the weather.
When play resumed on Saturday, Northern Colorado was able to get a run on the board as Evan Johnson led off the bottom of the eighth with an infield single to short. After advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch, Jack Pauley brought his teammate home on a single to left center field making it a 6-1 game. Both teams had threats in the ninth, but no one came home to end the game.
Game Changer
Utah Valley starter Jackson Cofer kept the UNC lineup off balance all game long allowing just one hit and walking a pair in his 6.1 innings of work. That strong performance allowed the Wolverine's bats to come alive in the middle of the game and take control of the game over UNC.
Notable
- Bears catcher Alex Kiel extended his hit streak to 11-games on Friday with a single in the seventh.
- UVU's leadoff hitter, David Modler was a terror for the Bears going 4-for-5 in the game.
- Northern Colorado's pitching staff combined for nine strike outs in the game. Five of those nine came from Jacob Howard in his 2.1 innings of work.
What's Next?
The Bears and Wolverines will finish the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 10:30 am.
