Northern Colorado baseball dropped its double header against Metro State Saturday afternoon.
DENVER – Northern Colorado closed out its weekend with a doubleheader at Metro State Saturday. The Roadrunners pitching shut down the Bears hitters to win both games by the score of 2-1, and 4-0.
Game 1
How It Happened
The first game of the day turned into the a pitchers dual as both starting pitchers earned the quality start, allowing just one run combined.
Metro State earned the early lead starting with Donnie Ortiz, Jr. drawing a walk to lead off the inning. He worked his way over to third with a sacrifice bunt and ground out, before scoring on a wild pitch from Conner Leedholm.
Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the eighth when Ortiz once again started a run with a leadoff walk. He moved around the bases with a sacrifice and groundout again making it to third. This time instead of scoring on a wild pitch he came home on a sharply hit single to third base by Trent Maloney for a 2-0 lead. That run proved to be important for the Roadrunners.
UNC continued to fight in the ninth as Jack Pauley walked to lead off the inning. Brett Minnick, brought Pauley home on the next at bat with a double to right center as Pauley slid in to beat the tag. UNC would end up with runners on first and second after Matt Burkart walked as well. MSU got out of the jam though with three straight strike outs swinging to earn the 2-1 win.
Game Changer
Metro State's starting pitcher Javi Vega kept Northern Colorado off balance at the plate all game long. He ended up going seven strong innings allowing no runs on four hits striking out seven.
Game 2
How It Happened
The Roadrunners didn't waste time getting on the board in game two, striking for a pair of runs in the first inning. The rally came with two outs as MSUD had a single and double to put runners on second and third. Hunter Donaldson delivered the two RBI single up the middle to make it a 2-0 game.
The Roadrunners added a pair of insurance runs in the second and third inning, while the Bears offense continued to struggle.
Northern Colorado put runners on in the fourth and sixth, but were unable to make anything of it, while the Roadrunners did not add to their lead the rest of the way, earning the 4-0 win.
Game Changer
Once again, Metro State's starting pitcher was the key in the game. Starter Derek Stimpson earned the complete game shutout win going the seven innings allowing just two hits. Only two other Bears reached base via walk, while he struck out six.
Notable
- Nick Tanner was the lone Bear to record multiple hits on the day going 3-for-7 in the twin bill.
- In game two, the duo of Zach Heath and Justin Mulvaney shut down Metro State during the final three and a third innings of the game. The pair allowed just two hits and no runs while striking out one batter, each.
- UNC finished the week with a 2-2 record, winning both games at home, while dropping the pair on the road.
What's Next?
