Northern Colorado started a seven game road trip Tuesday, falling to Nebraska 8-2.
LINCOLN, Neb. – The Northern Colorado baseball team began its seven game two week road trip on Tuesday afternoon when they took on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Huskers took the opener, 8-2 over the Bears.
How It Happened
It didn't take long for Nebraska to get on the board when Scott Schreiber hit a three-run home run to left center in the bottom of the first putting them up 3-0.
The Huskers added another three runs in the third, when they strung together a five hit, one error inning to go ahead 6-0. In the inning four of the five hits were singles, three of them brining in a run.
Northern Colorado put runs on the board in the fifth, as Alex Kiel began the inning with a single to right field. The Bears proceeded to load the bases as Sam Leach and Evan Johnson singled as well.
Cole Maltese would deliver the big hit for the Bears, with a 3-2 pitch hit down the left field line to score a pair of Bears with one out. UNC ended up stranding the final two runners on base though.
Nebraska responded in the bottom half of the inning getting back both runs they gave up in the top of the inning to go back up six at 8-2.
Northern Colorado had its chance in seventh to get back in the game when they loaded the bases with no outs. The team was unable to get the timely hit they needed though, ending it with a strike out and 4-6-3 double play.
Game Changer
The combo of Scott Schreiber and Jake Meyers came up big for Nebraska on Tuesday, going 5-for-9 with five runs scored and four RBI in the game.
Notable
- Dean Lawson and Corey Nakakura each had multi-hit games for the Bears with two hits apiece, Nakakura also walked once.
- Jacob Howard and Karver Pate combined for four scoreless innings to end the game, allowing just two hits while striking out five.
- The Bears and Huskers finished the game with 10 hits each.
Quotable
Head Coach Carl Iwasaki
"It was a tough one today with the wind. We matched Nebraska's offense, just unable to get the timely hitting we needed with runners in scoring position. We looking forward to coming back tomorrow and playing plus defense behind our starter Cody Carroll."
What's Next?
The Huskers and Bears will go right back at it tomorrow at 12:35 pm MT at Hawks Field.
