UNC hit four home runs in its doubleheader split with North Dakota State
GREELEY – UNC baseball continued its four-game series against North Dakota State, splitting a doubleheader Saturday. The Bears dropped the seven inning game 7-4, and won the nine inning game 7-6.
Game 1
How It Happened
Just like Friday, North Dakota State started the game scoring a run in the first inning. Leadoff hitter, Drew Fearing singled through the right side to start the game, and ended up scoring on a failed pickoff attempt to first base.
NDSU added to its lead in the third, when Ben Peterson sent a three-run home run over the left center wall to put the Bison up 4-0.
Northern Colorado responded in the bottom half of the inning. Dean Lawson began the Bears rally with a walk, and Evan Johnson followed it up with a single. Jack Pauley stepped up to the plate and delivered the big hit for UNC when he hit his second home run of the season to left center making it a 4-3 game.
It would stay that way until Logan Busch roped a liner down the right field line to score two more for the Bison. He later scored to cap off a three run inning to make it a 7-3 game.
Cole Maltese responded for UNC with a solo home run to lead off the bottom half of the inning, but that would be it for Northern Colorado's scoring as they fell 7-4.
Game Changer
North Dakota State held a one run lead when Logan Busch stepped into the left handed batter's box with a pair of runners on. He laced a pitch past UNC first baseman Brett Minnick and down the right field line scoring two. That would be enough for NDSU to secure the game one victory.
Game 2
How It Happened
It was Deja vu as North Dakota State opened the game scoring a run in the first inning. Two-hole hitter Alec Abercrombie tripled to right center and came home on a Mason Pierzchalski single.
Northern Colorado evened the game up in the bottom of the first when Evan Johnson singled in the hole between third and short. After a balk moved Johnson to second, Pauley came through with another big hit for the Bears. He hit an opposite field double down the left field line to score Johnson.
The Bison seized the lead in the fourth, as UNC's pitching struggled with its command, loading the bases. A fielder's choice and sacrifice fly to go up 3-1.
North Dakota State's lead grew to 6-1 in the fifth when the Bears walked in two more runs, and had another score on a ground out, but UNC would respond.
It begin in the bottom half of the fifth when Dean Lawson walked and Cole Maltese brought him home with a two-out RBI single to center field. Pauley, recorded his second home run of the day when he launched a bomb over the right center field wall to putt UNC within two at 6-4.
The scored stayed that way until after the stretch when Sam Leach stepped up to the plate. He hit UNC's second home run of the game and third of the day with a solo shot to begin the inning. Johnson walked and Pauley walked to set the table for Minnick.
Minnick delivered with a liner to centerfield driving in a pair of runs, putting UNC up 7-6.
Anthony Brady came in to start the eighth and earned the six out save, striking out four Bison in the process.
Game Changer
The Bears had the life brought back into them when they scored three in the fifth, but it was the home run to lead off the seventh that shifted all the momentum in Northern Colorado's momentum. Leach began a three run rally for UNC.

Overall Thoughts on Day
"We are always going to be in these games if we are playing to our ability and potential. We may not always be hitting the long ball like we did today, but we will hit which never puts us out of it. We still need to focus on our pitching and defense which is a work in progress. You have to give credit to Dylan Shiraki and Anthony Brady for keeping us in this game today. Shiraki was big shutting down North Dakota State in the mid to late innings, and Brady shutting the door when we got the lead. We still have room to grow pitching early in the game, but we were able to earn this win today."
About Evan Johnson and Jack Pauley
"They give us some big offensive power, and then you through Brett Minnick in there too. Add in the bats of Tyler Yamaguchi and others in the middle in the lineup will come back and battle everyday no matter how the previous day went. A big thing for us is we need to get on base and not have just solo home runs when are hitting them. That was key for us today having multi-run home runs."
Keys to finishing out tomorrow
"We are going have to come out and grind again tomorrow against a good North Dakota State team that will prevent you from scoring runs. We are going to have to be ready to go from the first inning all the way through the end to finish out this series with a win."
What's Next?
The Bears and Bison finish out their four-game series Sunday with a noon first pitch at Jackson Field.
