Santa Barbara, Calif – For the second time in two days, Northern Colorado drew the early morning game on the second day of the Gaucho Classic. Saturday morning brought good fortune to starting pitcher, Jayme Reddacliff and the Bears, outlasting Sacred Heart, 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Coming off their most impressive come back of the season, head coach Shana Easley and the women of Northern Colorado entered Saturday morning focused and determined. Facing a familiar opponent in Sacred Heart, both teams eyed at making the necessary adjustments to emerge the victor.
It appeared as if both teams had provided proper scouting reports for each of their pitchers, as both set the other's lineups down in order in the first inning.
The long-ball was good to Northern Colorado yesterday, and Saturday proved no different. On a 3-2 and nobody on, Lauren Paige cracked a home run over the left field fence, vaulting the Bears into the lead, 1-0.
Lead in hand, Jayme Reddacliff exuded the very definition of confidence. In the first, second and third innings, no Sacred Heart batter even came close a hit. Reddacliff's perfect game ended in the fourth inning, surrendering two. However, her defense had her back, turning a 6-3 double play to quickly end the SHU threat.
Northern Colorado pushed for insurance runs in the sixth inning after two walks from Emily Holtz and Kaley Garcia. It was Sacred Heart's turn, though, to make a stand defensively, leaving the two stranded at their respective bases, keeping themselves in the game.
UNC earned only two hits the entire game with the second coming in the seventh and final inning. Jordyn Wiatrak, coming into the game tied for most home runs with Erica Dick and Rachel Johnson, wasn't content on sharing the temporary title. Wiatrak, again on a full count, smashed a home run to centerfield, extending UNC's advantage to two.
A single and error, quickly put a Sacred Heart runner at second base with nobody out.Â
Once again, relying on her defense, Jayme Reddacliff kept the ball inside the park, let only one run across the dish, and secured the Bears seventh victory of the season, 2-1.
