San Jose State Jumps Out Early to Defeat @NCBearsBaseball

San Jose State scored four in the first on its way to defeating Northern Colorado 5-4.
How It Happened
San Jose State jumped out to the lead right away in the first inning when their first four hitters reached safely on an error by second baseman Dean Lawson, then a single and back-to-back hit by pitches to go up 1-0.
The Spartans continued to add on to its lead putting up three more runs in the inning to lead UNC 4-0.
Northern Colorado's offense was held silent until the fourth inning when they were trailing 5-0. The Bears got on the board when Cole Maltese led it off with a solo home run, his third of the season.
UNC continued to chip away at the San Jose State lead in the sixth, seventh and eighth inning. Jack Pauley led the scored the team's run in the sixth by doubling to start the inning. Teammate Evan Johnson would bring him home later on in the inning.
Maltese recorded his second RBI of the game in the seventh when he scored Dean Lawson on a single through the right side.
The final Northern Colorado run of the game came in the eighth on a solo home run by Johnson, his third of the year as well.
Pauley tried to get UNC in the game with a two out double in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Bears fell 5-4.
Game Changer
San Jose State had another strong start from its pitching staff Saturday afternoon, as Matt Brown went six strong innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four Bears. Between Brown and SJSU's strong start, it was enough to give the Spartans the victory.
Notable
- Four Bears finished the game with two hits in Cole Maltese, Jack Pauley, Evan Johnson and Alex Kiel. Maltese and Johnson each had a home run and two RBI.
- Northern Colorado left 10 runners on base during the game, compared to seven by San Jose State.
- Jacob Howard and Connor Leedholm combined for 6.2 solid innings of relief for the Bears. They allowed just one run on five hits.
What's Next?
Northern Colorado comes home for its home opening series against North Dakota State. The Bears and Bison series begins March 3rd at 2 pm.
