BOX SCORE
GREELEY, Colo. – Sophomore guard, Jordan Davis' career-high 30 points wasn't enough as North Dakota (18-8, 13-3 Big Sky) edged Northern Colorado (9-18, 5-11 Big Sky) in overtime 84-81.
How It Happened:
UNC trailed the Fighting Hawks for 38 minutes of regulation. The team's only lead off the first half came off a junior guard, DJ Miles three-ball to put UNC up 7-6 with 17:16 to play until the break.
UND led by as many as 10 (21-11) points in the half, but every time it seemed the Fighting Hawks were pulling away, the Bears had an answer.
With time winding down, redshirt sophomore guard, Chaz Glotta connected on one of his three treys of the night to pull Northern Colorado within two (34-32) with a little over two minutes to go.
The Fighting Hawks got two buckets to end the half and the Bears went into the locker room down 38-34.
The second half was more of the same. North Dakota traversed on a 12-4 run in the first five minutes and ballooned its lead back to double figures (50-38).
UNC spent the remaining 15:00 minutes of the game fighting to catch up, which they did.
Miles drained back-to-back threes to trim the team's deficit down to five (52-47), but UND answered at the other end of the court to keep an eight-point advantage, which they maintained over the next seven minutes.
With the Bears behind 63-58 with 5:54 to play, it became a Davis highlight reel.
The sophomore scored 15 of the last 16 points for the team and tied the game up (72-72) at the free throw line with two clutch makes at the stripe with 41 seconds to go.
Neither team had in answer in the final seconds, sending UNC and UND into OT for the second time this season.
As history usually does, it repeated itself again this evening. The Bears got up quickly to start the extra period, thanks to two freshman forward, Kai Edwards makes at the line and a Davis jumper.
The 76-72 lead didn't last long as North Dakota banked back-to-back trips to the free throw line, tying the game up at 76 apiece with 3:01 left.
A big jumper from UND's Cortez Seales and one make at the free throw line tipped the scales in the Fighting Hawks favor 82-79 with time winding down.
Davis drove the lane and got a runner to fall with six ticks left, but North Dakota sealed the game at the free throw line.
Game Changer:
The North Dakota bench provided the biggest spark in the game. Cortez Seales came off the bench to score 23 points for the Fighting Hawks. UND's bench outscored UNC's in the tune of 24-2.
Key Stat:
11 points, 14 rebounds – Kai Edwards finished the night with his first career double-double. The 14 rebounds were also a career-high for the freshman from Amsterdam.
In Their Words:
Head Coach, Jeff Linder:
"There's a reason they're (North Dakota) the best in the conference. They've found ways throughout the season to win close games like that. I have to give North Dakota credit, that's why they're the first place team in the league. They have guys that understand their roles and have two really good guards who can make plays when they have to."
"To our credit, for our guys, who aren't playing for anything to come out and play as hard as they have and as hard as they did against a team, who we've got to overtime with twice, has my full respect. Sometimes you have to go through losing before you can win. That's the name of the game and we'll fight back and get back to work for our last two games."
Notables:
- Davis scored 24 of his career-best 30 points in the second half and in the overtime period. He ended the game 11-of-18 from the field and also recorded six assists and five rebounds in the loss.
- DJ Miles and Chaz Glotta also gave UNC some strong minutes. Miles ended with 19 points and Glotta chipped in with 10.
- The Bears won the glass battle, out-rebounding UND 49-40.
- UNC still struggled from the free throw line overall, going 13-of-23 (56.5%).
- Northern Colorado held the Fighting Hawks in check from the three-point line. UND ended the game 1-of-12 (8.3%) from beyond the arc.
- The Bears have lost their last five games at home.
Up Next:
Men's hoops will finish out the last two games of the season next week when they host Portland State (Mar. 2) and Sacramento State (Mar. 4).
