GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado lost 35-6 to No. 14 Oklahoma University on Sunday afternoon, but managed to win two ranked matchups.
[125] No. 28 Trey Andrews and [165] No. 24 Keilan Torres both upset higher seeds, and helped solidify their chances for qualifying for the NCCA Championships in March.
With a traditional start to the dual, the action began at 125 lbs., with No. 28 Trey Andrews taking on No. 16 Christian Moody. As anticipated, the match was very exciting and the action got rolling immediately, with Andrews securing a takedown in the first 12 seconds.
The first period ended with Andrews leading 2-1. Moody had choice and took bottom, and failed to escape. Andrews was dominant on top, riding out Moody for the entire period, and carried the 2-1 lead into the third period.
Andrews chose bottom as well and escaped in 6 seconds. Clinging to a 3-1 lead and 2:00 of riding time, Andrews was cognizant of how to approach the rest of the match. Staying patient and calm, Andrews managed to get another takedown at the end of the match and clinched the victory 6-1.
With the win, Andrews gave the Bears a 3-0 lead over the Sooners, but it would be the only time during the afternoon the Bears held the advantage over Oklahoma.
The only other victory came at 165 lbs, as No. 24 Keilan Torres toppled No. 11 ranked Yoanse Mejias.
In what was a methodical and hard fought win, Torres dictated the entire pace of the match with excellent wrestling on his feet and on the mat as well. Torres was able to snag two takedowns in the first period and led 4-2 in the first period.
To start the second period, Mejias chose bottom and escaped quickly. Once again, Torres used great counter offense and took down Mejias to end the period.
Starting the third period, Torres led 6-3 and chose bottom. After quickly escaping, Torres continued his patient pace, and grabbed another takedown to secure the upset win 10-5.
Although the Bears lost 35-6, it was a very hard fought dual today. Coach Nickerson agreed in saying,"Overall, I felt we wrestled well. Andrews and Torres both came through with two big wins to help their chances for NCAA qualification chances. We have a quick turn around and travel to California this week."
The Bears will travel to California to take on Cal State Bakersfield University and Cal Poly this coming weekend.
