Bakersfield, Cali. – Northern Colorado (1-7, 0-3 Big 12) dropped its first of two duals in California to CSU-Bakersfield (5-5, 1-2 Pac 12) on Friday night 22-15.
[149] Ben Polkowske started the dual off right for the Bears with an 11-2 major decision over Everett Pratt. After a tough loss to No. 12 ranked Davion Jefferies of Oklahoma last week, Polkowske responded with a huge win.
At 157 lbs., Jimmy Fate lost by decision 7-3 to Jacob Thalin. Fate competed hard for UNC, but still has room to improve, as he is only a true freshman.
165 lbs. was one of the most anticipated matches of the night, as No. 16 Keilan Torres wrestled against No. 16 Lorenzo De La Riva. Torres was coming off a huge upset of No. 11 Yoanse Mejias of Oklahoma last week, and riding a three-match win streak in duals. Torres narrowly lost 11-10 to De La Riva, which gave the Roadrunners a temporary 6-4 lead over the Bears.
[174] Tanner Davis picked a good time to grab his first dual win of the season for Northern Colorado, grabbing a 9-5 decision over Matt Penyacsek. With relentless effort, Davis was able to grind out a hard fought victory, and gave Northern Colorado a 7-6 lead.
After missing the match against Oklahoma last week, [184] Dylan Gabel picked up right where he left off, with a 18-2 technical fall over Noe Garcia. This gave UNC its largest lead of the night at 12-6.
The second, and final true freshman to appear for the Bears in the starting lineup this evening was [197] Jamarcus Grant. Although Grant was bested 7-2 by Jacob Sieder, he displayed progression and continues to get better in certain situations.
UNC dropped its next two matches, as [285] Jack Kuck and [125] Trey Andrews both lost tough contests.
[133] Rico Montoya was the last Bear to win on the night, as he registered a 9-3 decision over Carlos Herrera.
The Bears eventually lost 22-15 to the Roadrunners, and drop the first dual of the Pac 12 tour this weekend.
Northern Colorado will take on Cal Poly at 2 PM [MT] Sunday, Feb. 5.
