FINAL RESULTS
AURORA, Ore. – Northern Colorado women's golf earned its second straight Top 10 finish on Tuesday, placing eighth overall at the Rose City Collegiate. The Bears holed a 910 (307, 302, 301) team score, finishing 46-over par.
How It Happened:
UNC posted its best overall round in the final 18 holes at the par-72 Langdon Farms Golf Course with a 301, behind sophomore Janet Yeo. Yeo marked her second consecutive round of 75 (+3), solidifying a Top 10 finish.
Yeo tied for eighth place with a 54-hole total of 220 (70, 75, 75 = +4). The second year player was good for 15 pars and three bogeys in the finale.
The next best finish for Northern Colorado came from senior, Jordan Sunset. Sunset walked off the 18th green with a 78 (+6). In her first appearance of the fall season, she put together a 229 (79, 72, 78 = +13) overall score, tying for 39th.
Freshman, Marisa Hisaki had the best round of any UNC golfer on Tuesday. Hisaki signed off a 74 (+2). For the tournament, the newcomer tallied a 231 (80, 77, 74 = +15), good for 47th on the leaderboard in the 87-member field.
Rounding out the collegiate for the Bears were junior, Christina Ferreira and senior, Kala Keltz.
Keltz came in 50th overall with a three round total of 232 (78, 78, 76 = +16), while Ferreira took 62nd with a 237 (82, 79, 76 = +21).
Oregon State won the team honors at the event. The Beavers shot an 876 (+12) as a unit. Individually, CSU Fullerton's Martina Edberg bested the entire field. Edberg finished with a four-under, 212 for the Collegiate.
Game Changer:
Freshman, Marisa Hisaki and junior, Christina Ferreira were the only two golfers to shave strokes off each round as the tournament progressed. Both golfers improved by three strokes each 18 holes of play.
Key Stat:
This was sophomore, Janet Yeo's first career Top 10 finish and her second consecutive Top 20 finish on the year, as she placed 19th at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic.
Coach Bidne's Thoughts:
"Overall as a team we had a tough time staying confident with our ball striking all tournament. This is a course that demands great control of the ball on the greens, and if you aren't confident and play defensively, the course will come back to get you. That seemed to be our nemesis both days. There are still a lot of positives to take away from this event as a team, including both Marisa [Hisaki] and Jordan [Sunset] who posted their best collegiate rounds of their careers."
On Janet Yeo's performance:
"It was great to see Janet play three impressive rounds and get a Top 10 finish. She has been hitting the ball great as of late and it will only be a matter of time before she finishes a tournament on top."
What to focus on moving forward:
"What's needed to get to that next level is getting everyone to figure out how they can scrape together a 75 on a day where they might not have their best game. It's early in the season and the girls are making progress. It will be nice to get a week of practice in before we head down to Denver to play in DU's event. They always have a great field, so if we come together and play to our full potential, we will most definitely turn some heads."
Up Next:
The women's golf team will be back in action on Oct. 7-9 as they play in the Ron Moore Invitational hosted by the University of Denver.
