BLACK BUTTE RANCH, Ore. – For someone wanting to turn professional, Conner Barr is off to a good start. The former UNC men's golfer captured the 107th Oregon Amateur Championship title this past weekend, defeating Brian Humphreys 2 and 1 in match play at the Glaze Meadow Golf Course.
"Winning was a step in the right direction as far as turning professional," Barr said. "I still have to get a lot better before 2017, but this definitely has helped build some confidence."
He began his match 2-down after the first two holes, but won the next two, as the match made the turn all-square. However, Barr got on a hot streak of great shots and making putts, winning the next eight holes (10-17).
The pair finished the first 18 holes with Barr holding an 8-up lead heading into the second 18 holes of play.
Humphreys battled back on the second 18, winning five holes to Barr's zero between holes 19-27 to get within 3-down. Barr did steady the ship, winning with a birdie on the 28th hole and moving to 5-up after the 30th hole.
"I feel honored to join a notable list of champions at the Oregon Amateur," Barr added about his win. "The strategy was a little different considering it was match play – I played a little more aggressive on the par 5's than usual."
After Humphreys got within 3-down once again after a long birdie putt on the 32nd hole, both players tied the 33rd, moving Barr to dormie.
"If you lose a hole during match play it's pretty easy to shrug off because you can come back strong on the next hole," he concluded with. "I'm going to the same approach with the stroke play events going forward."
Humphreys won the 34th hole with a bogey to survive one more hole, but couldn't make his short chip shot from over the green on the 35th hole, resulting in a tap-in par for Barr to win the Championship.
Barr will be playing in the PNGA (Pacific Northwest Golf Association) Amateur in late July in hopes of qualifying for the U.S. Amateur in August.
