@NCBearsBaseball Mounts a 10 Run Comeback, Walk-Off Victory Saturday
5/7/2016 6:09:00 PM | Baseball
Northern Colorado baseball came back from 9-0 to walk off GCU Saturday
How It Happened
Grand Canyon jumped out to its big 9-0 lead with all nine of the runs coming between the second and fourth inning. The four through seven-hole hitters for the Lopes did most of the damage during this time, scoring five of the team's nine runs and drove in three of them.
Northern Colorado would start its comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jake Garcia took one for the team, taking a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Tyler Yamaguchi.
The Bears would strike again in the sixth with a four run inning to cut it to 9-5. The first run of the inning was scored on an error by the GCU second baseman Austin Bull on the 15th pitch of Jacob Ek's at-bat, allowing Yamaguchi to be the second run of the game. Ek would later come home himself in the inning on a wild pitch.
GCU would commit another error and another wild pitch during the sixth to allow two more UNC runners to cross the plate.
UNC would use another multiple runs inning in the eighth to pull within one at 9-8. It was the top half of the Northern Colorado order that would do the damage in the inning. Nick Tanner led it off with a single up the middle.
Dean Lawson, Cole Maltese and Ryan Yamane would all proceed to reach base as well scoring a run, and loading the bases.
Lawson and Maltese would score the second and third runs of the inning on a throwing error from GCU's shortstop.
Down to their final out of the game, Lawson and Maltese delivered the game tying and winning hits. Lawson tied the game with an RBI double to left center field. After seeing a pair of pitches, Maltese drove the 1-1 pitch to right center, giving UNC the walk-off as Lawson raced across the plate to extend UNC's win streak to six games.
Game Changing Moment
Facing their last out the game, the Bears Dean Lawson stepped into the batter box with a runner on first. Lawson would end his career day with an RBI double to tie the game at nine.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: Sophomore Dean Lawson had himself a career day Saturday. He finished the contest with five hits on six at-bats, the most in his career. He also scored
once, the game winning run, and drove in a pair of runners.
Grand Canyon: Shortstop Marc Mumper played a big impact on GCU's offense Saturday afternoon. With one swing of the bat, Mumper put three runs on the board for the Lopes. It was his lone hit of the day, but was a big one in helping Grand Canyon jump out to its nine run lead.
Notables
- The nine run comeback is the first time UNC has comeback trailing by five or more runs since 2012. They trailed Chicago State then by five runs (7-2), but came back to earn a 19-9 victory.
- Dean Lawson's five hits on the day made him the first Bear since Jensen Park on May 17, 2013 against New York Institute of Technology.
- This third time this season that UNC has come back to win a game after trailing after the eighth inning.
- Jacob Howard earned his first career win Saturday. He pitched five innings in relief striking out three batters, allowing just one hit and no runs.
Quotable
"Today was a great testament of how this year's team never gives in to an opponent. It was a great comeback walk-off win that was earned against one of the top teams in the conference. We need to stay focused on Sunday's opportunity to play hard nine innings for this last game of the series." – Carl Iwasaki
What's Next?
Northern Colorado will send their Sunday best to the mound tomorrow afternoon in Nick Tanner for the high noon first pitch. He will face off against Tyler Wyatt of GCU as the Bears go for their second straight sweep.
