@NCBearsBaseball Miss Opportunities Against New Mexico State
5/19/2016 8:06:00 PM | Baseball
UNC baseball let too many opportunities go by in a 10-6 loss to New Mexico State
How it Happened
UNC was the first team to score in the game, with a run in the bottom of the first. The Bears did not record a hit during the inning, but loaded the bases with Dean Lawson,
Ryan Yamane and Brett Minnick walking. Lawson would end up scoring on a wild pitch from New Mexico State Starter Marcel Renteria.
The lead would not last long though, as NMSU tied the game in the second and took its first lead at 3-1 in the third.
Just like the Bears lead after the first, the Aggies lead after the top half of the third didn't last long. Yamane walked to start the inning, and then Cole Maltese hit his sixth home run of the years to center field to even the game at three.
New Mexico State would once again respond in the next half inning, with a pair of runs to be up 5-3.
That lead would hold serve until the sixth when UNC tied it up with back-to-back doubles from Tyler Yamaguchi and Cam Huber.
NMSU would take the lead for good with a run in the seventh, and added one four more insurance runs in the eighth.
Dan Reese would score a run in the ninth for the Bears.
Game Changing Moment
After surrendering the lead in the top half of the seventh, Northern Colorado put themselves in a good position with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom half of it. Seattle would bring in lefty Tyler Erwin to face the situation. Erwin would get out of the jam with a Yamaguchi fielder's choice and Huber strike out.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: Dan Reese came into the game in relief for UNC after an injury to Rob Cashel. He would end up going 2-for-2 at the plate scoring twice, while also earning a walk.
New Mexico State: Designated hitter Austin Botello showed why he is the Aggies three-hole hitter. He was 3-for-4 in the game with two runs scored and three RBIs. He finished just a home run shy of the cycle.
