Northern Colorado fell to Chicago State 5-4 in a walk-off Saturday
CHICAGO – Northern Colorado baseball's comeback effort was cut short when Chicago State walked-off on the Bears in the bottom of the ninth for a 5-4 decision.
How it Happened
Chicago State built its lead early on with a three spot in the first inning. Cody Freund had the big hit of the inning, driving in two to put the Cougars up 2-0.
The Bears would finally get on the board in the fifth inning. Dan Reese would start the inning with a double to right field and advanced to third on the play due to a fielding error. Corey Nakakura would bring him home in the next at bat with a single through the right side.
In the sixth, UNC would cut the lead to one. Jacob Ek led the inning off with a double and came home to score on a Dean Lawson ground out.
Chicago State would get the runner back in the bottom half of the inning though, extending its lead to 4-2.
Facing their final three outs of the game, UNC mounted a comeback. After a fly out to start the inning, Lawson and Cole Maltese would each single to put runners on the corners. Ryan Yamane would drive both runners in with a two-RBI triple down the right field line. He would end up stranded at third to end the inning.
Chicago State would work a two out rally with a single from Zach Thomas single, followed by Cody Grosse's game winning triple to end the game.
Game Changing Moment
With the game tied and two outs in the bottom of the ninth Cody Grosse's triple broke the tie and ended the game.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: Dan Reese once again made a big impact on the game for UNC. Reese was the lone Bear to record multiple hits in the game today, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Chicago State: Starting pitcher Justin Wyant pitched a complete game for the Cougars. He ended the game allowing four runs, just three of them earned on eight hits, while striking out five and walking just one hitter. He only faced 33 Bears hitters, six above the minimum.
Notables
- Northern Colorado pitchers faced traffic on the base paths throughout the day, but did a good job of limiting runs scored, stranding seven Chicago State runners on base.
- Dean Lawson once again recorded a hit for UNC today. The hit extends his hit streak to nine games and is the longest of any UNC player this season.
- Both teams were putting the ball in play today, only drawing two walks combined, while CSU also had two player hit by a pitch.
What's Next?
UNC will look to continue its trend of playing well on Sundays when the two squads meet up tomorrow at 11 am Mountain Time. Nick Tanner will take the mound for UNC.
