@NCBearsBaseball Offense Struggles Against Chicago State Friday

Northern Colorado's offense mustered only four hits in a 4-2 loss to Chicago State
CHICAGO – Northern Colorado and Chicago State baseball started a three-game series on Friday night at Cougars Stadium, with CSU defeating UNC 4-2. Both teams did not muster much offense in the game with just 10 combined hits and six walks.
How It Happened
Chicago State was the first team to strike with a run in the second on Chris Hipchen to put the Cougars up 1-0.
In the fifth UNC would tie it up when Dan Reese walked with an out, stole second, and then came home on a Tyler Yamaguchi single to right field.
The tie game wouldn't last for long as CSU retook the lead with a pair of runs from an Andy Gretonson single singled through the left side with the bases loaded.
The Bears would cut the lead to one in the top half of the seventh once again from the duo of Reese and Yamaguchi. Reese started the inning off with a single and scored the second run of the game on a Yamaguchi sacrifice fly.
Just like in the fifth, Chicago State would come back to score a run in the bottom of the seventh. This run came from another Gretonson RBI single.
Game Changing Moment
After recording the first two outs of the fifth inning, Corey Nakakura was relieved for by Connor Leedholm. Leedholm would struggle giving up a pair of walks to start his outing to load the bases after inheriting a run. Then against Gretonson he would give up the deciding two run RBI single.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: Dan Reese was the lone Bear to score on the night, scoring both in the fifth and seventh inning. He finished the day going 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk and stolen base to go with the two runs scored.
Chicago State: Andy Gretonson was UNC's kryptonite on Friday evening. He would drive in three of the Cougars four runs, finishing the day going 2-for-4 at the plate and having a pair of stolen bases.
Notables
- Dean Lawson extended his hit streak to eight games, with a pair of hits for UNC.
- Nick Tanner's five-game hit streak came to an end, finishing the night 0-for-4.
- The Bears could not get anything going on offense, putting up just four hits compared to 14 strike outs. Chicago State pitcher Jake Perkins had 12 of those strike outs in seven innings pitched.
What's Next?
UNC and CSU will continue their three game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 pm mountain time. UNC will send senior Alex Werbach to the mound.
