PALO ALTO, Calif. – Men's golf finished the third round at The Goodwin on a high note. The Bears fired a 290 (+10) as a team, their second lowest total at the 54-hole tournament, moving up two spots on the leaderboard to finish 16th.
Overall, UNC ended with an 875 (288, 297, 290) placing higher than Arizona, in-state foe Colorado State and two other Mountain West teams.
"Sure we missed some opportunities to play better today, but this was a great event for the team," Head Coach Roger Prenzlow said. "We beat some teams in the Pac 12, Mountain West and some West Coast Conference schools. The guys competed hard and it was fun to watch."
Seniors Conner Barr and Steven Kupcho bounced back from their troubled second rounds to come into the clubhouse with identical scores of 72 (+2).
Newcomer Eric Chen was right there with the veterans, also carding a 72 in the final 18 holes of play.
Kupcho had an up and down front nine on Saturday with a birdie sandwiched between two bogeys on holes two through four. He got back to even after another birdie on the seventh. At the turn, the senior doubled the 10th, but ripped off eight straight pars to end his day.
Kupcho had the highest finish of any UNC player at The Goodwin, tying for 50th overall with a 217 (67,78,72) total in the 138-member field.
Barr moved up eight spots on the leaderboard in the finale and came into the clubhouse tied for 63rd with a meet total of 219 (71,76,72).
His round was nearly identical to Kupcho's. After making the turn at even par he too doubled hole 10, but was good for eight straight pars to walk of the 18th with a 72.
Chen, the third player to record 72 on the day was also even after the first nine holes. The freshman tallied a bogey on the 10th and 16th to end the round.
Chen jumped 19 players to come in a tie for 75th place. He totaled a 221 (76,73,72).
"Steven played a nice event, Li (Chen) is getting better every tournament and Conner hung in there and really helped," Prenzlow added.
Fellow freshman Josh Matz tied his best round of the tournament with a 74 (+4). Matz was +2 over with two holes to play, but carded back-to-back bogeys on the 17th and 18th.
The California native marked a 225 (74,77,74) after 54 holes, and tied for 105th.
Sophomore Sam Marley shot 81 (+11) to round out the squad. He started the day off with a birdie, but that would be the only one of his round.
Marley scored a 231 (79,72,81) in three rounds and finished tied for 126th overall.
"As I told the guys, we need two of the best weeks of practice before we go to UC Davis in a few weeks," Prenzlow stated. "We are now beating teams that were beating us handily just a few months ago. It is fun to play in elite events and to see us getting better."
UC Davis won the team title coming in -13 under. The Aggies Luke Vivolo captured the individual title shooting -10 under.
UNC has a few weeks off before competing in its final regular season event of the season at UC Davis' El Macero Classic on April 15-17.
