GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado (9-19, 6-10 Big Sky) erased a 15-point second half deficit, but it wasn't enough as the Bears fell on a last second three pointer to Portland State (10-17, 6-10 Big Sky) 89-86 on Saturday night.
Junior guard, Anthony Johnson etched his second 30-point game of the season, finishing with 30 points in the loss. Johnson ended the evening 10-of-16 (62.5%) from the floor and 5-of-8 (62.5%) from beyond the arc, with 20 of those points coming in the first half. Johnson also dished out a team-high tying four assists in the defeat.
Redshirt junior guard, Dallas Anglin complimented Johnson's night with 12 points of his own on 4-of-9 (44.4%) shooting. Anglin also pitched in with four assists, two rebounds and a steal.
"It was Cameron Forte – you don't see to many guys like that in our league who are 6'7 and are that skilled. He can put the ball on the floor, he can post you up – he demands a double team and that's what starts everything," head coach B.J. Hill said. "I just didn't feel like we could guard him one-on-one all night – we had to throw different things at him and he's pretty good."
UNC jumped out to an early lead (16-9) six minutes into the game, but the Vikings fought back over the next 10 minutes to tie the contest up (27-27) with 6:52 left until intermission.
PSU outscored Northern Colorado 19-12 in the final six minutes of the first half to take a 46-39 lead into the locker room.
Two different runs of 7-0 and 9-0 by Portland State to start the second half dug the Bears into a hole (71-56) with 11:03 to play in the contest.
Northern Colorado didn't let the scoring gap get to them and came storming back. UNC's offense went on a 27-11 run to take the lead (83-82) off a junior guard, Jordan Wilson three-ball at the 3:10 mark.
During the rally, Wilson and redshirt freshman forward, Ibrahim Sylla combined for 17 of the 27 points.
Both Wilson and Sylla finished the night with 10 points apiece.
The Viks and Bears traded buckets on the next two possessions and UNC found itself down by one (86-85) with 2:17 to play.
Wilson tied the game up (86-86) at the charity stripe, going 1-for-2 with 0:30 seconds remaining.
Portland State held the ball for a last second shot and found Calaen Robinson open on the wing and he knocked down the game-winner to spoil senior night in Greeley.
Northern Colorado finished the night 54.5% (30-of-55) from the field and 55.6% (10-of-18) from three point land. Portland State outshot the Bears, converting 32-of-56 (57.1%) from the floor and 7-of-16 (43.8%) from downtown.
"I feel like we lost the game within the first twenty five minutes. It was disappointing not to see the same type of grit that we showed just forty eight hours ago," Hill added. "They shot fifty seven percent and you're not going to win very many games giving up those types of percentages, that and turning the ball over fourteen times in the first half – that was the difference in the game."
Men's hoops closes out the regular season with a visit to the Treasure State to take on Montana State (Mar. 3) and Montana (Mar. 5). Both games are set for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
