Scott's 27 Points, Not Enough for @UNCBearsWBB at Saint Mary's
12/16/2016 10:59:00 PM | Women's Basketball
UNC women's basketball's Savannah Scott scored 27 points in a 75-65 loss to Saint Mary's
MORAGA, Calif— Northern California native Savannah Scott's career-high 27 points were not enough for Northern Colorado to get past Saint Mary's on Friday night. The Bears (7-3) fell to the Gales (5-5) 75-65.
How It Happened
Northern Colorado took a quick 4-2 lead behind baskets from Krystal Leger-Walker and Abby Kain, before both teams went scoreless for over two minutes of play. UNC would not score for over four minutes until Savannah Smith hit a 3-pointer to give the Bears a 7-5 lead.
The teams started to warm up offensively after that as Northern Colorado grew its lead to three. Saint Mary's went on a 7-0 run to go up four inside a minute to play in the quarter. Katie Longwell's three at the end of the first quarter cut the Gales lead to 15-14 after the first 10 minutes of play.
Savannah Scott hit a 3-pointer to put the Bears up two to open the second quarter, but then Saint Mary's went on a 12-0 run to lead by 10, and never gave up that lead for the rest of the game.
After a UNC timeout, the team responded with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to seven, which would hang around for the remainder of the quarter.
Following the break, the Bears offense struggled in the third, being outshot 62.9% to 26.3% and outscored 18-13. The struggles included a scoring drought of 4:12. The Gales led by as much as 19 during the quarter, but a 5-0 run from Savannah Smith at the end of the quarter moved the advantage down to 14 going to the fourth.
Continuing from the run to end the third quarter, Northern Colorado scored the first seven points of the fourth, cutting the SMC lead to seven with 8:21 remaining.
Saint Mary's grew its lead back to 14 by the 3:40 mark, before UNC went on one more run. Strong defense and a Katie Longwell and Scott 3-pointer sparked the run. The team held SMC without a field goal over the final 3:40 of the game, but they did hit 11 free throws to hold on for the 75-65 win over UNC.
Game Changer
While Northern Colorado's offense struggled for the most part on Friday night, Savannah Scott was able to fill up the bucket. She ended the night with a career-high 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting including four from downtown. She also had a team-high five rebounds, an assist and a steal.

- The Bears were out shot, and out rebounded 52.8 percent to 37.9, and 46-24.

Overall Thoughts
"We played a very experienced and tough Saint Mary's team. We did some good things even when we got down to make a run of it at the end of the game. This game was a tremendous opportunity for our team to grow and understand the magnitude of how physical the game is played, and how tough you have to be in certain phases of the game against really good teams. We just came up short in a couple areas, mainly rebounding, and also not shooting the ball as well as we needed to on the road.
I am really proud of our effort. We were shorthanded and down 19 at one point. To then get the lead down to six and have a chance with the ball in our hand to cut into it more showed a lot of grit and resilience as we get ready to play the Big Sky."
On Savannah Scott's Play
"She did so many aggressive things with the ball and took it upon herself to score the ball for us at times. She also defended tremendously. The stats do not show the number or rebounds she kept alive for us on both ends of the floor. This was one of her best overall games I have seen from her. She had the will to win and competitiveness that matched up with Saint Mary's, and looked like the best player on the floor, and I am just really proud of her."
What's Next?
UNC will close out its non-conference portion of the schedule on Monday, when they head to Pacific. The Bears and Tigers will tip-off at 8 pm MT.
