UNC volleyball dropped a heart breaking five set match to Idaho State Thursday night
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Northern Colorado saw its 2016 season end in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Idaho State Thursday night.
How it Happened
Senior libero Makenna Meier stepped up to the service line to begin Thursday's match with an ace to give Northern Colorado early momentum, and a 4-1 lead. The Bears used a 4-0 run soon after that to grow their lead to 13-8.
Idaho State proceeded to swing the momentum its way though, as Northern Colorado's offense struggled, allowing the Bengals to work their way into the first set. ISU used a 3-1 and 3-0 run to take the lead at 16-15.
Kim Weissmann then came alive for the Bears with three of her six first-set kills coming at the end of the set, including the 25th point in a 25-21 set win.
The second set began similar to the first, after a Bengal service error gave UNC the first point, Makenna Meier had her third ace of the match. The Bears flew out to a 7-1 lead in the second.
UNC grew its lead to eight behind a 3-0 run with a pair of service aces from Taylor Els and a Kortney Lockey Kill. Northern Colorado would keep Idaho State at distance the rest of the set and end up taking it 25-15 for a 2-0 lead at the break.
The third set was a back and forth battle as neither team could earn an advantage being tied after the first 20 points.
Idaho State used 7-3 run to gain a small three-point advantage. Northern Colorado tried to battle back, but the Bengals were able to force the fourth set.
Just like the third, the fourth was battle with neither team leading by more than three points throughout. A late 3-1 run by ISU was the deciding factor, putting them up 23-20 and forcing the fifth and final set.
The fifth set was all Bears to begin with as Meier had a pair of service aces to put the team up 4-0. That lead would continue into the switch after an Alex Kloehn kill made it 8-5. UNC went up 10-6 forcing an Idaho State timeout, before the tide switched over to the Bengals.
A 3-0 ISU run put them within one of the Bears, and then another rally of four straight points made it a one point Bengal lead at 14-13. UNC worked back to force extra volleyball, but Idaho State never gave up its one point advantage. A Chole Hirst kill and Hayley Farrer and Brooke Pehrson block ended the match.
Game Changer
Idaho State worked its way back into the fifth set behind three Northern Colorado errors to make it 10-9. They then took the lead 14-13 lead on a 4-0 run with three kills in it to take the lead and never relinquish it.

Overall Statement
"It's tough to swallow to be up 2-0 and in control the match and then watch it slip away. It's always tough to end your season like that. We just didn't stay as aggressive as we needed to. We really backed off and the service line and couldn't control the net with our block."
On Makenna Meier's play
"She served aggressive, it was high error, high reward. She made some key plays for us and they attacked her at the end of the match from the service line."
About the offensive struggle
"We couldn't get our middles going the way we needed to. That was our best match up and didn't get enough out of it. We ended up depending too much on our left sides. Even when we did find the open spot, we were unable to find the floor and finish the rally."
