@UNCBEARSFB Suffers 34-21 Loss at UC Davis
10/15/2016 8:58:00 PM | Football
How It Happened:
Northern Colorado moved the ball well in the first half, but came up short on a few opportunities. The Bears cashed in on two drives, scoring once in each quarter.
Redshirt junior running back, Brandon Cartagena, who started in place of an injured Trae Riek, put the first points on the board for UNC. Cartagena broke free on a 16-yard run to make it 7-3 in favor of the Bears with 6:40 remaining in the first quarterd.
Cartagena finished with 58 yards on 17 attempts, while senior back, Darius Graham complimented with 54 yards on 10 attempts, with both players earning a touchdown in the loss.
The Aggies matched the score and added another one in the second quarter to take a 17-7 lead over the Bears with 6:36 left to play in the half.
Behind some strong running from Cartagena and precise passing by senior quarterback, Kyle Sloter, UNC drove 59 yards in 10 plays, capped off by a 20-yard TD pass to redshirt sophomore tight end, Theron Verna to send the team into the locker room down by three, 17-14.
Sloter's stat line on the night read 18-for-26 for 166 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception. He was also sacked four times in the contest.
As the rain started to come down, the third quarter was more of the same with both teams trading touchdowns. A 30-yard run by UC Davis and a 2-yard scamper from Graham made it 24-21, but the Aggies remained out in front as the final 15 minutes dawned on the scoreboard.
The changing moment came late in the fourth quarter. Down 27-21 with 3:01 remaining, the Bears were backed up at their own 12 yard line after a 54-yard punt from UC Davis, Sloter was picked off by Isiah Olive, who walked straight into the end zone to seal UNC's fate.
Northern Colorado got one more crack at it on offense, but a stout Aggies defense forced a turnover-on-downs and handed the Bears a 34-21 defeat.
The Bears defense was led by senior backer, Lavell Sanders. Sanders racked up a career-high 11 tackles (8 solo, 3 assist) in the loss.
As a team, UNC limited UC Davis to 349 yards of offense, only two yards shy of its season-best as they held Rocky Mountain College to 347 yards of total offense.
Game Changer:
The changing moment of the game was UC Davis' DB, Isiah Olive's pick six. After two straight stops by the UNC defense, the Bears offense had a chance to put forth a game-winning drive trailing 27-21, but the interception gave the Bears a 13-point deficit with 2:55 remaining in the game.
Key Stat:
After attempting 17 passes in the first half, UNC went to a run-first mentality in the second half. UNC threw it just nine times after the break and ran the ball 17 times.
Coach Collins Thoughts:
Head Coach Earnest Collins Jr.
"We need to figure out what kind of team we are right now. We have a lot of talent on this team and we have to find out a way to put our athletes in a position to exceed, period. As coaches, we have to figure out the best way to put our players in a position to have success on the field, and that's on both sides of the ball."
On the second half
"The weather wasn't a factor for us. It was raining, but that didn't cause us to run the ball more – UC Davis still threw the ball. It was still about X's and O's for us and we had success with the run early on in the game, but they (UC Davis) made some good adjustments after halftime and made us look uncomfortable on both sides of the ball."
Notables:
- After allowing just eight sacks in the first five games of the season, the Bears gave up four to the Aggies in the loss.
- Senior DE, Mikhail Dubose finished with a team-best 2.0 TFLs in the game for a total of 6 yards.
- Through six games, Northern Colorado has yet to record an interception.
- Senior QB, Kyle Sloter's 166 yards was the second time this season that he's thrown for under 200 yards. The first time came in the win against NAU, when he threw for 145 yards.
- The Bears move to 1-2 on the season on the road and 1-2 in the Big Sky Conference after the loss.
- This was the first time UNC has lost to UC Davis since the 2013 season, when they fell at home to the Aggies, 34-18.
- For the second time this season UNC's offense finished with under 300 total yards. The Bears ended with 269 yards against UC Davis.
- The Bears defense is to be commended for a strong performance in the second half. UNC forced the Aggies to punt three out of their six drives in the last two quarters, and limited them to just 10 points.
