Northern Colorado volleyball falls at Eastern Washington 3-0
CHENEY, Wash.—Northern Colorado volleyball closed its Big Sky opening weekend facing Eastern Washington Saturday afternoon, falling to the Eagles in three sets. EWU won the three sets 25-20, 25-19, 25-19. UNC started last seson 0-2 in the Big Sky loosing to the same two teams, but later on recovered to win the Big Sky Championship.
For the fifth straight match the Bears had a different player lead them in kills than the previous match. Katie Champion was that player today, finishing with a season high 13 kills.
"We had a good match from Katie Champion getting our offense going," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "It has been a positive for the team having different players leading us in kills."
Timarie Nymeyer (8), Kendra Cunningham (7) and Emily O'Neil (6) were the other bears to finish with double digit kills.
UNC had two players finish with double figure assists and another two in digs. Audrey Landry and Ryleigh Haynes had 22 and 11 assists, respectively, while Meagan Garcia and Kendra Cunningham.
After Eastern Washington controlled the first two sets, UNC got out to an early 9-4 lead in the third. The Bears continued to lead the set at 12-7. EWU proceeded to go on a 7-0 to take a 14-12 lead. UNC and EWU traded points back and forth, until an Eastern Washington, 9-4 run to end the match.
"As a team we need to work on becoming a more consistent in our play moving forward," Oates said.
Northern Colorado will return home on Thursday, October 1 against Montana State. First serve scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
