Match Notes: Northern Colorado | Big Sky | Montana | Montana State
GREELEY, Colo.—Northern Colorado volleyball returns home for some key early season Big Sky Conference matches this week against Montana State and Montana. The matches are the first two of a four-match home stand over the next two weeks.
The Bears started Big Sky play last week dropping both matches to Idaho and Eastern Washington. It is the second straight year that UNC has started conference play with an 0-2 record. Last year UNC responded well though, finishing third in the conference during the regular season before sweeping their way through the conference tournament.
Despite the losses, UNC's senior trio of Kendra Cunningham, Meagan Garcia and Katie Champion played well last weekend. Cunningham recorded her seventh double-double of the season against Idaho with a team leading 15 kills and second-most 13 digs. Garcia led the team in digs during both matches with 26 and 19, respectively. Champion finished in double figures for kills in each match with 11 vs Idaho and team high 13 vs Eastern Washington.
The weekend starts on Thursday when UNC hosts Montana State. The Bobcats come into Greeley led by a new coach in JJ Riley. MSU split its matches to open Big Sky play defeating Montana while falling to Idaho State.
Since the Bears joined the Big Sky, they are undefeated against MSU.
Saturday, Northern Colorado will host the other team from the Treasure State, in the Griz of Montana. Just like MSU, UM is under a new head coach in Bryan Doyon. The Griz enter the weekend 0-2 in conference play, falling to Weber State and Montana State last week. Before coming to Greeley to take on the Bears, Montana will face North Dakota Thursday night.
Saturday's match is the team's annual Dig Pink match. The Bears in partnership with Banner Health Northern Colorado Medical Center will be selling t-shirts and raising money to help with Breast Cancer awareness. Fans are also encouraged to wear pink for the match.
