Bears volleyball fell to Idaho Thursday night in the Big Sky opener
MOSCOW, Idaho—Northern Colorado (4-10, 0-1 Big Sky) volleyball opened conference play Thursday night against the University of Idaho. UNC fell to the Vandals in four sets (20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 26-24).
"We did well with a different line up tonight, but just made some mistakes at key moments which we will work on for the rest of our matches," head coach Lyndsey Oates said.
Kendra Cunningham led the Bears with 15 kills on the night. Fellow classmate Katie Champion was the lone other Bear in double figure kills with 11.
Junior Audrey Landry set a career high with 50 assists in the match and 10 digs for her first career double-double, filling in for Ashley Guthrie.
Northern Colorado hade more kills in the match than the Vandals 57-46, but was out hit .222 to .135. UNC's 35 hitting errors would end up playing a key role in the match's results.
"We were just too high error tonight, giving away 52 free points based on all of our errors," Oates said
On the defensive side, Meagan Garcia led the way with 26 digs, just four short of her career high. Cunningham (13) and Makenna Meier (13) also finished with double-digit digs. The 15 kills and 13 digs gave Cunningham her seventh double-double of the season.
Finishing strong at the end of sets, was a big key in the match's outcome. The Bears started the match off well, closing the first set on a 19-9 run after Oates took timeout with the team trailing 11-6. UNC was unable to use that momentum to continue to control the match.
The two teams traded points back and forth to start the second set, before UI closed on an 11-4 run after being tied up at 14.
In the third and fourth set Idaho closed on 10-4 and a 3-0 run, respectively, to take each set and the match.
