GREELEY, Colo.—It's a new season for the Northern Colorado volleyball team, conference season. After facing many challenges during the non-conference season, which included playing five straight top 30 opponents at one point, the Bears are looking forward to get into conference play.
Head coach Lyndsey Oates and her team understand the importance of playing their best volleyball near the end of the season, and there will be growing pains along the way. That process started in August, but takes a new perspective now.
The Bears will face a pair of Pacific Northwest, and fellow north division foes in Idaho and Eastern Washington to open up conference play. The first of two matches this weekend comes against Idaho on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The Vandals enter the match with a 3-9 record. Last year the two teams split their matches against each other, each winning on the others home court.
UNC will finish up it's Big Sky opening weekend when they travel to Cheney, Washington and take on the Eastern Washington Eagles at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. EWU is led by senior Allie Schumacher and enters big sky play with a 5-6 record. Before taking on the Bears Saturday, the Eagles will open Big Sky play against North Dakota Thursday. Just like UNC and UI, Northern Colorado an Eastern Washington split their matches against each other last season.
Northern Colorado will be in the pursuit of their seventh overall Big Sky Championship and third regular season title since joining in 2006.
