Once, Twice, Three Times A Quarterback
- All three QBs saw action in the win over Houston Baptist, just not at the same position. Junior Kyle Sloter lined up at receiver catching one pass for 14 yards and being targeted twice. Starting QB Jonathan Newsom's day was cut short midway through the second quarter of the game, ending 5-of-11 with 73 yards passing. Redshirt freshman Jacob Knipp also got some valuable time under center converting 8-of-12 passes for 77 yards and his first career passing TD.
Back-To-Back
- Junior wide out Stephen Miller, redshirt freshman Trae Riek, and redshirt sophomore Anthony Davis have all scored at least one touchdown in the last two games. Riek leads the team with 4 TDs this year, which ranks him 2nd in the Big Sky only behind Eastern Washington's Cooper Kupp.
Now It Counts
- After two non-conference games UNC now dives into Big Sky action. This will be the only conference game played this weekend out of the 11 other Big Sky teams. This is only the second time in the last five seasons that the Bears have opened conference play during week three. The first came in 2011 under Collins when they faced Idaho State.
Past To Present
- For the first time in 13 years Northern Colorado has began a season 2-0. If they win on Saturday, it will be the first time in 16 seasons a UNC team has won it's first three games. The last time it happened was in 1999. That team went on to win six straight games and finished 9-2 and was co-North Central Conference champions.
Last Time Against Southern Utah
- UNC lost 27-21 to the Thunderbirds on Sept. 28, 2013 in Greeley. Bears' QB Tim Tancik finished with 269 yards passing, two touchdowns, but had two INTs too. The bright spot of the loss was the defense. They held SUU to just 53 yards rushing.
Saturdays in September
- Northern Colorado is 3-5 all-time in games played on September 19, The last time being in 2009 against Eastern Washington, falling, 16-0 to the Eagles. The last win on the 19th came back in 1998 after the Bears defeated Augustana College 56-9.
Bears in Utah
- The Bears are 4-12 all-time when playing in Utah and is 0-4 in games in September in the Beehive State. This will be the fourth trip to the state under Collins, he currently sits with a 1-2 in games in Utah.
Weekend Forecast
- It looks to be a little cooler for kickoff this weekend in Cedar City, Utah. The high is set for 77 degrees with a low 44.
Nine-Five-Nine
- Coach Collins has changed his defensive over to a nine-five-nine mentality, which means having nine players within five yards of the ball 90% of the time. It seemed to pay off in the Houston Baptist game as the defense was credited with 64 assisted tackles.
Return Specialist
- Redshirt sophomore Ellis Onic II had his first career punt return for a touchdown in the win over Houston Baptist. The return went 71 yards and gave UNC a much needed boost heading into halftime. Overall, this is Onic's second return for a touchdown. The first came in 2014 against Sacramento State when he traveled 100 yards off a kick return for six. The return was the third longest in Division I History and the tenth longest all-time.
POTW
- Safety Taylor Risner was awarded the ROOT Sports Defensive Player of the Week award by the Big Sky Conference today for his efforts last Saturday. Risner recorded a career-high 16 tackles, one pass break up and one tackle for a loss, which was a huge third down stop for UNC, and helping the defense to three turnovers in the victory. This was Risner's first career conference Player of the Week award.
