The women's tennis team had one singles runner-up and one doubles champion this weekend
DES MOINES, Iowa – UNC Women's Tennis competed at the Drake-hosted Roger Knapp Invite this weekend. Overall, the Bears went 15-17 on the weekend in singles/doubles play, with one doubles champion and one singles second-place finisher.
"This weekend was a great start to our Fall season," head coach Brenda Vlasak said. "This was the best showing we've had at the Drake invite in my 14 years of coaching at UNC."

The doubles team of junior, Beth Coton and freshman, Remi Immler were seeded No. 3 in the Flight "A" bracket. The Bears defeated the Northern Iowa team 6-4 to advance to the semifinals, where they were met with the No. 2-seeded Osabuhein/Montgomerie pair from Northern Illinois, eventually falling 0-6.
Competing in the flight "C" doubles were freshman, Lily-Ana Kreutzer and junior, Marissa Baca. The pair, seeded No. 1 in the flight, cruised through the three rounds of play, including a 6-3 win in the finals over Pendleton (Wisconsin-Milwaukee)/Peck (Green Bay) team to be named the Champions.
"We've only had ten days to formulate teams and see who might be a good match," Vlasak explained." I was proud of how hard Marissa and Lily worked to get to the finals. They pleasantly surprised us and proved how well they could work together on the court."
In the Flight "A" bracket of singles-play, sophomore Lea Krajcovicova exceled for the Bears, making her way into the finals after defeating No. 3 seed Adey Osabouhein of Northern Illinois in the quarterfinals and No. 2 seed Mariel Ante (Drake) in the semis. In the finals, Krajcovicova met No. 4 Jieke Stroobant of Northern Iowa, ultimately falling 3-6 and 5-7 to finish the runner-up in the bracket.
"Lea had an outstanding tournament and continues to prove her relentlessness in beating some of the toughest players. She continues to work hard and learn from each match and I believe she will only become a better player."
Freshman Anna Battersby had a taste of success in the flight "B" singles bracket, winning in the first round over Darby Rosette (Creighton) to make it to the quarterfinals. Battersby would go on to face Emma Kranendonk of South Dakota, who ultimately won the match.
"It was a nice preview of our talents and everyone experienced some form of success throughout the tournament," Vlasak said in summation. "I am definitely happy with our over-all performance."
Next on the schedule for the Bears is the USAFA Invitational this coming weekend, Sept. 18-20.
