Northern Colorado volleyball battled against Wyoming Saturday night falling to the Cowgirls in four sets
LARAMIE, Wyo.—Northern Colorado volleyball finished a challenging weekend in the Pistol Pete Showdown facing host Wyoming Saturday night. The Bears took the first set against the Cowgirls 26-24, but dropped the next three.
"It was a really frustrating match, we let an opportunity slip away. We played at a really high level in set one and then up and down in set two," head coach Lyndsey Oates assessed about the match. "In hindsight if we had been able to keep the high energy up the whole second set I think we could have come away with this match. We are a mature team and need to execute better at the end of those close sets."
Kendra Cunningham recorded her fifth double-double of the season for the team with a team leading 13 kills to go with 10 digs. Her performance over the two day tournament earned her All-Tournament honors. Her second of the season.
"Kendra played well in all three matches for us this weekend, and really carried us in the Kansas match," Oates said about the senior. "Her performance there, I think earned her the spot on the All-Tournament team."
UNC had two other players finish in double figures in blocks, in Makenna Meier (15) and Ryleigh Haynes (12). Haynes recorded her first career double-double adding in 16 assists.
"I thought she (Ryleigh) played great defense and did well in the six-two rotation," said Oates. "We haven't really practiced it a lot going into tonight, but as a team I think we handled the six-two well and it can be a good option for us."
Outside of Cunningham Kortney Lockey and Timarie Nymeyer played well on the offensive side for Northern Colorado each recording nine kills. Neymeyer was the team's second leading attacker hitting .333, just behind Alex Kloehn's .364.
The first two sets of the match we back and forth battles combined featuring 23 ties and 13 lead changes. The Bears squeaked out the first set 26-24 while Wyoming won the second 27-25.
Following the break it was all Cowgirls. Wyoming took the final two sets and held UNC to .000 hitting in each.
"I thought they started to serve us tougher and we did not pass as well in the third and fourth set. That took away some of our opportunities on offense," Oates said. "We are also a little banged up right now and using different line ups."
With the conclusion of tonight's match the Bears end their streak of playing five top 30 teams over a two week span.
"It's going to help us playing all of this top competition right now," said Oates. "They exploit some weaknesses we have that other teams wouldn't show us. Playing this competition now will help prepare us for November."
The Bears return home next week for three matches starting on Friday, September 18 when they host Utah State at 7:00 p.m.
