Northern Colorado women's basketball historic season came to an end on Thursday night at UCLA
LOS ANGELES – Northern Colorado women's basketball saw its historic season come to an end Thursday night in Pauley Pavilion. The Bears (22-13) put up a fight against UCLA (16-18), but fell 74-60.
Northern Colorado finished the season with a program best 22 wins under first year coach Kamie Ethridge.
"I am so proud of this team for all that they have done this year," Ethridge said." We grew so much as a team and to do all we did is so great and just makes you so proud as a coach."
Senior Stephanie Lee (Casper, Wyo.) had a huge game in her last time putting on the Northern Colorado uniform with 31 points on 13-23 shooting.
Fellow seniors D'shara Strange (Fountain, Colo.) and Lindsay Mallon (Lone Tree, Colo.) also had solid games for the Bears.
Strange finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Meanwhile Mallon had 10 rebounds, five assists, four points and three steals.
"Our seniors gave us great minutes tonight and it's what you come to expect from them," said Ethridge. "They were great leaders for us all year long and once again showed it tonight."
UNC and UCLA played a very even first 33 minutes of the game, before UCLA closed out on an 11-5 run over the last seven minutes to secure their win.
The big stretch was from 5:41 until 2:03 when the Bruins went on an 8-0 run.
"We just had a bad stretch and got fatigued and that is on me," Ethridge said. "UCLA is a very talented team and we were right with them all game until that stretch late."
The Bears and Bruins played equal in first half both grabbing 16 rebounds, with five assists and nine turnovers. The only difference was UCLA made all four of their 3-pointers and UNC went 2-9 from 3-point range to give UCLA a 39-31 lead at half.
Lee paced UNC in the first half with 16 of their 31 points.
UCLA was led by Nirra Fields 26 points in the game.
