Northern Colorado volleyball picked up the win and qualified for the Big Sky Tournament Friday night
MISSOULA, Mont. – Northern Colorado (11-15, 7-6 Big Sky) volleyball earned a trip to its 10th straight Big Sky Tournament on Friday night when they defeated Montana (7-18, 3-10 Big Sky) in five set (21-25, 25-21, 27-25, 22-25, 15-5).
"This was a match similar to our North Dakota match last week," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "We played really hard and our defense held them to lower percentages as the match went on. We made good adjustments as the match went on and were playing scrappy unlike at the beginning."
The Bears out-hit the Griz .311 to .176, while also recording 82 digs and 13.5 blocks.
After the first two sets featured 25 ties and seven led changes, UNC jumped out to an 8-2 lead at the switch in the fifth set and never looked back to clinch the tournament berth. The Bears held UM to -.292 hitting in that final set.
Five UNC players recorded double figure digs, led by junior defensive specialist, Audrey Landry's 18. Three of the five Bears used those digs as a part of a double-double tonight. Ashley Guthrie (5 games) and Kendra Cunningham (4 games) both extended their double-double streaks, while Kortney Lockey recorded the first of her career.
Cunningham paced the team's offense with 18 kills and 15 digs, and Lockey added in another 13 kills to go with a new career-high 11 digs. Cunningham also set a new career-high with seven total blocks in the match. She was not the only player to set a career-high in blocks, Emily O'Neil did so as well, with seven to tie with Cunningham for the team lead in the match.
Guthrie set up Northern Colorado's balanced attack with 54 assists and digging up 12 attacks.
Along with Cunningham and Lockey, teammates Alex Kloehn and Timarie Nymeyer had double digit kills with 10 and 13, respectively.
"Our offense was pretty solid tonight and was well balanced, which is a positive moving forward, we just have to continue getting better defensively and slowing down our opponents attacks," Oates said.
Nymeyer led the team in attack percentage hitting with .600. It is the first time a Bear has done so with at least 12 kills since she did last season against Eastern Washington (9/27/14).
In two of the three sets Northern Colorado won, they hit above .300, going .333 in the second set and .444 in the third.
UNC now has a quick turnaround staying in the Treasure State to take on Montana State tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
