The Bears defeated the Hornets 3-1 on Friday morning to move to the Finals of the Big Sky Championships
MOSCOW, Idaho - UNC women's soccer tallied another win over No. 6 seed Sacramento State on Friday, in the first Big Sky Conference Tournament semifinal of the day. The Bears, seeded No. 2 in the tournament, beat the Hornets 3-1 to advance to the championship match, to be held Sunday, Nov. 8, at 1:00PM MT.
The Bears moved to 13-7-1, after the day's win.
Overall, the Hornets outshot the Bears 15-14, but the Bears took nine shots on goal, compared to Sacramento State's six.
Mariel Gutierrez took the first shot of the game, shooting wide in the sixth minute. Not even a minute later, though. Rebecca Lancia would take a corner kick that junior Kassy Castillo would knock straight into the goal to give the Bears a quick 1-0 lead.
The Hornets would respond five minutes later, scoring off of a free kick in their first shot of the game, tying it up 1-1 in the 12th minute of play.
The UNC squad would fight hard, taking four shots in the next 14 minutes and preventing zero from Sac. St. The Bears retook the lead just after the 26 minute mark, after another Lancia corner, this time knocked in by Gutierrez for her sixth goal of the season.
Six minutes and two more chances later, another goal would be added to the UNC total, this time by Lancia after an untouched cross shot past the goalie. The goal would conclude the Bear chances for the half, and UNC defense would allow only one shot by Sac. St in the remaining minutes (blocked), sending the teams into halftime 3-1.
Sydney Schroeder got things going in the second half, taking a chance on goal after a minute of play. It would be another nine minutes before either team would take another shot, and even then, the Hornets would take all shots up until the 62nd minute.
Offensively, Northern Colorado only added two more shots in the half, compared to the Hornets' 10, but defended brilliantly to prevent any Sac. St. scoring, securing the 3-1 lead that would launch them into the Finals.
Goalkeeper Kaitlin Ruff added five saves to her career total, moving to a 6-5-0 record on the season.
Â
This is the third time UNC has beat Sacramento State all-time, another of which was earlier this season on Oct. 16 (2-1 in 2OT), and are now 3-6-3.
No. 1 seed and tournament host Idaho [14-4-2, 10-0-1] beat out the No. 5 Montana Grizzlies Friday afternoon, 3-2, to earn their own spot in the Finals. The last time the Bears faced the Vandals was in Oct. in Greeley, when the UNC fell 2-0 (recap).
The Big Sky Tournament Championship game will take place Sunday, Nov. 8th at 1:00PM MT, and can be followed on Twitter (@UNCBearsSoccer), via Big Sky TV, or via live stats (link below).
