Five Bears scored in double figures Friday night in the 78-65 victory
SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The Northern Colorado women's basketball team enjoyed its first game after Thanksgiving defeating Akron 78-65. UNC used a balanced offense and strong performance on the boards, to defeat the Zips Friday afternoon.
While being outshot 42.5 percent to 39.3 percent, the Bears had five different players finish with 10 plus points and outrebounded Akron 41-35. Offensively the team was led by a career high 16 points from sophomore Savannah Scott.
Scott went 5-of-9 from the field including making a career high four 3-point shots. She also added in six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Two other bears recorded career highs scoring as well in Courtney Smith and Kianna Williams with 10 and 12 points, respectively.
Williams also had a career high in assists with five, while adding in four rebounds and a steal. Meanwhile C. Smith had five rebounds and an assist.
Northern Colorado used a 23-7 run spanning eight minutes and thirty seconds of game time and two quarters to earn the victory.
After a sluggish first quarter and beginning of the second, UNC was trailing 20-15 with 6:13 until halftime. From that point until early in the third quarter it was all Bears.
Northern Colorado would hold Akron to just five more points in the half from that point closing it out on a 14-5 run and up 29-25 at the break. Courtney Smith played a key role in that run scoring four of the first few points during it to spark the team.
Coming out of the locker room, UNC stayed hot, opening the half on a 9-2 run extending their lead to 11 by that point. The Bears would continue to add on to their lead growing the lead to 17 by the midway mark of the third quarter.
That lead would be enough as the Zips would not get any closer than six in the final stanza as the Bears went on to its first neutral site non-conference victory since December 21, 2008 vs Washington in Cancun, Mexico.
The Bears will hit the court again tomorrow in another neutral site game, vs Valparaiso with tip set for 3:00 p.m.
