Scouting The Bears (Game Notes)
- UNC faced a tough task when they opened the year at No. 4 Kansas. The Bears kept the game close for the majority of the first half, but eventually KU's size and ball transition got the best of UNC, falling 109-72.
- Junior guard, Cameron Michael poured in a career-high 27 pts in the loss. Michael shot 50% from the field and beyond the arc.
- Fellow junior guard, Anthony Johnson also hit a milestone, scoring a career-high 17 pts at the historic Allen Fieldhouse.
- This will be the third time the Bears will play the Cougars under sixth year head coach B.J. Hill. Hill owns a 2-0 record against the Cougars.
- UNC had five scorers in double figures in last year's 93-58 win over CCU. Junior guard, Jordan Wilson led the team with 14 pts.
Scouting The Cougars
- Colorado Christian sits 0-2 on the season after dropping games to Dallas Baptist and St. Edwards University.
- Much like UNC, CCU is relatively young, boasting only one senior on the roster and lost four of its starters from the 2014-15 season.
- Both Zane McLemore and Wayne McCullough are averaging double figures after the first two games. McLemore is averaging 20.0 pts a game, while McCullough is averaging 19.0 pts each contest.
- McCullough is the only returning starter from last season. He started all 34 games for the Cougars, averaging 10.4 pts a game and shot 43.8% from the field.
- CCU's last win in Greeley came in 2003, when they knocked off the Bears, 77-75.
Noteworthy
A Loss, But Some New Career Marks
- Junior guard, Cameron Michael set a new career-high in points, ending his night with 27 on 8-of-16 shooting, including 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. He led all scorers in the loss at No. 4 Kansas, 109-72.
- Fellow junior guard, Anthony Johnson also put up a career-high in points with 17. Johnson shot 6-of-13 from the field and scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half.
- The third junior in double figures was guard, Jordan Wilson. Wilson eclipsed the double-digit mark late in the game, finishing with 11 points and a team-high four assists.
- Foul trouble plagued the team in the second half, resulting in three Bears (Jordan Davis, Johnson, Spencer Mathis) fouling out of the game.
Non-Conference Challenges
- UNC gets a taste of nearly every conference this season, playing a Big 12 opponent (Kansas), Pac 12 (Colorado), Mountain West (Colorado), SEC (Mississippi State), and a Big West (UC Irvine) team.
- In 2014-15, Northern Colorado went 5-6 in its non-conference schedule.
- In his six seasons, this is the second hardest non-conference schedule Hill has put together in terms of opponent's RPI rankings.
- The Bears will play host to the Maui Jim Maui Regional Tournament Nov. 21-22 opening with Maryland-Baltimore County on Nov. 21 and then playing either Austin Peay or Cal Poly on Nov. 22.
- This was the second time in program history that Northern Colorado has made the trip to Lawrence. The first came in the 2005-06 season as the Bears fell to the Jayhawks, 85-62. They are now 0-2 in the series.
Series History
- Northern Colorado surprisingly sits just 7-5 all-time against Colorado Christian and just 3-2 in the last five meetings.
- UNC is however, 2-0 against the Cougars under head coach B.J. Hill, averaging 95.5 pts in the two games.
- The Bears have won by 24 and 35 points in the last two meet ups.
- Hill is 6-1 all-time against Division II schools, with his only loss to a lower rank coming in 2011-12 against Westminster College (Utah), 73-60.
