UNC falls in a tough five set match at Northern Arizona
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.—Northern Colorado (8-15, 4-6 Big Sky) and Northern Arizona (19-4, 9-1 Big Sky) volleyball competed in a highly contested Big Sky Conference match up Saturday afternoon, with NAU prevailing in five sets. The match featured 40 ties and 13 lead changes.
"It was a much better match today than on Thursday night for us. I am proud of the way we turned it around and played hard," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "Wins are going to be hard to come by on the road, so we still have to keep battling."
Kortney Lockey set a new career-high with 19 kills leading the Bears in the match. Three other Bears, Katie Champion (10), Kendra Cunningham (12) and Alex Kloehn (10) also had double figure kills.
Cunningham and teammate Ashley Guthrie recorded their 10th and fifth double-double of the season, respectively. Guthrie had 58 assists and 13 digs, while Cunningham added 18 digs to her 12 kills.
"We stuck to the game plan well and played great defense today," said Oates. "We just lost some key points in the serve and pass game that were pivotal."
UNC out-hit (.211-.180) and recorded more kills (68-59) than NAU, but 10 Lumberjack serving aces and 11 Bears serving errors evened up the match.
NAU took the first set 25-23 and looked to have the second set under control leading 20-17, when UNC closed out on an 8-1 run to even the match at the break.
Northern Arizona came out of the intermission fast, going up 15-5 and taking the set 25-19. The fourth and fifth set were back and forth affairs combining to feature 20 ties and seven lead changes.
In the fourth set UNC and NAU exchanged the first 28 points, before the teams traded mini runs pushing the score to 23 all. Eaton natives Lockey and Cunningham closed the set out with back-to-back kills to force the fifth and final set.
Northern Colorado led the final set at the switch 8-6. NAU and UNC traded runs with each other ending up tied at 13, before the Lumberjacks closed out the match on a 2-0 run.
"I thought we had an all-around good effort from both our starters and players coming off the bench," Oates said. "This is definitely something we can build off of for the rest of the season."
The Bears will return to action on Thursday, October 29 at 7:00 pm when they host Portland State.
