Bears Drop First Conference Match to Idaho

The Northern Colorado Women's soccer team traveled to Moscow, Idaho to open up the conference season against the Vandals.
MOSCOW, IDAHO. – The Northern Colorado Women's soccer team traveled to Moscow, Idaho to open up the conference season against the Vandals. The game would turn out to be a tail of two different halves. The first half both teams struggled to find opportunity's and in the second half it would be a scoring fest. The Bears would eventually fall, 3-2 to the Vandals.
In the first half it took both teams awhile to get going offensively. The Bears would strike first in the 17th minute when senior forward, Juliana Grover put a nice shot on goal only to be blocked by an outstretched keeper.
The Vandals would apply some pressure of their own in the half, firing off seven shots and landing three of them on-goal.
"The first half there were not a lot of opportunities, for either team it turned out to be a very even half," said head coach Tim Barrera.
The Bears would manage to apply some pressure later in the half when Grover added another shot on-goal, and junior midfielder, Rebecca Lancia would get involved also putting a shot on-goal in the 24th minute of the match. The Bear would finish the half with a total of three shots on-goal and one corner.
In the start of the second half the Vandals would come out strong. In the 47th minute, freshman, Olivia Baggerly would strike a nice ball into the back of the net giving the Vandals a, 1-0 lead.
Not even a minute later the Bears would fall into a deeper hole, when sophomore, Gabby Leong put the second goal in for the Vandals.
"We got caught on the first goal and never got time to re-group and they scored again," Barrera said. "We should a lot of character when we battled back and put one in for ourselves."
The Bears would begin to settle down and in the 57th minute when Grover would find sophomore Essence Ortiz-Laneir for the Bears first goal of the game.
UNC would strike again in the 70th minute. Shanlie Anderson would put one in the back of the net and tie the game up at, 2-2.
Northern Colorado would continue to take on Vandal pressure and in the 77th minute, Kavita Battan would seal the deal for Idaho putting one in the back of the night and giving the Vandals a, 3-2 lead. In the last 13 minutes of the game, Idaho's defense would hold strong and only give up one shot to the Bears. UNC ended the game, only getting off six shots to UI's 22 and only taking three corner kicks in the game.
"I was proud the girls fought back, Barrera said," it really showed we have a fighting attitude and it will help going forward in conference."
