Northern Colorado women's basketball finishes home stand with 66-47 win over Grand Canyon
GREELEY – Behind a 32-point performance from Stephanie Lee (Casper, Wyoming) and a double-double by D'shara Strange (Fountain), Northern Colorado's women's basketball team defeated Grand Canyon, 66-47 Wednesday night.
"I was pleased with our effort tonight," head coach Kamie Ethridge said. "We were able to get into a good flow offensively and had a good low-post presence tonight with Steph."
The 32 points for Lee were four shy of her career high. She also finished the game with three rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one steal.
"She is so talented and can make a variety of shots," Ethridge said. "She did a good job adjusting to the defense in the second half."
Strange had an even double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. She also added five steals and three assists to her stat line. The double-double was Strange's 20th of her career.
Strange and Lee were not the only Bears in double-figures as Rebecca Howell (Denver) had a season-high 12 points on 5-6 shooting.
"Becca found her shot against their zone and was hitting it tonight giving us a nice boost off the bench," Ethridge said.
Northern Colorado's bench finished with 21 points.
UNC had a very efficient night on offense, shooting 47.1 percent. The Bears had 16 assists on their 24 baskets. Lindsay Mallon (Lone Tree) led the team with seven assists.
Northern Colorado finished the first half on a 9-0 run to enter the locker room ahead 32-22. All nine points were scored by Lee. That was a part of a stretch in which she
scored 26 of the Bears 28 points.
UNC played the whole second half with a double-digit lead, with the largest lead being at 19.
The Bears will now go on a three-game road trip starting on Sunday, Dec. 14 at Utah State. Tipoff is in the books for 7:00 p.m.
"We are getting closer to being ready for conference play, and these next three games will really get us ready for that," Ethridge said.
