Northern Colorado women's basketball team fell just short against Utah State to start their three game road trip
LOGAN, Utah—Northern Colorado women's basketball started its three game road trip with a loss to Utah State, 65-61 on Sunday night.
Utah State (3-6) used a strong second half shooting, 54.5 percent from the field and getting 18 points from the charity stripe to gain the win over the Bears (6-3).
Stephanie Lee (Casper, Wyo.) once again had a solid game for UNC leading the team with 24 points on 9-18 shooting. She also added six rebounds, two blocks, and an assist.
Northern Colorado led the majority of the first half, using solid defense to hold USU to 32.8 percent shooting and getting nine points off of 13 turnovers.
A good reason for UNC's 25-22 lead at half was contributions from the bench. Kianna Williams (Perris, Calif.) came in and made her first three shots, including a three pointer to give her seven points in the half. She would finish the night with those seven points.
Utah State was able to take advantage of good shooting and foul trouble for the Bears in the second half to come back and get the win.
"It is a disappointing outcome for us tonight. We hurt ourselves with all of the fouls in the second half," said head coach Kamie Ethridge. "Even with the turnovers we forced,
we still were unable to overcome the fouls."
Starters D'shara Strange (Fountain), Kyleigh Hiser (Laramie, Wyo.), and Lindsay Mallon (Lone Tree) all fouled out of the game.
At the midway point of the second half UNC led by one, when the Aggies went on a decisive 6-0 run.
The Bears would not go away easily though, trailing by eight with 1:56 left, they would cut Utah State's lead all the way down to two.
The run started with a three from Lee, and followed up with another from freshman Savanah Scott (Campbell, Calif.). Utah State would go down and make one of its two free
throws before Lee would miss a three to tie it, but was fouled after an offensive rebound. She would only make one of two from the line and the Aggies were able to get he win over Northern Colorado.
"I was proud of the fight of our group not letting the game get away from us and battling all the way to the end," Ethridge said.
The Bears will now travel to Florida for two games starting on Wednesday against South Florida at 5:00 p.m. mountain time.
"We now have to regroup as a team and play two unbelievably good teams on the road. It will be a test for us to see how we rebound from tonight against them," said
Ethridge.
