Volleyball Sweeps Their Way to the Semifinals

Northern Colorado volleyball swept past Portland State to move on the Big Sky Conference Tournament semifinals
POCATELLO, Idaho – Northern Colorado (20-9) women's volleyball team defeated Portland State 3-0 in the Big Sky Tournament Quarterfinals Thursday afternoon on the Campus of Idaho State behind an all-out team effort defensively.
UNC held PSU (9-18) to .050 for the match, the fifth time this season the Bears held an opponent under .100 hitting.
Meagan Garcia led all Northern Colorado players with 12 digs, extending her streak of matches with double-digit digs to 19. Garcia was one of five Bears with five plus digs.
Northern Colorado also had six serving aces.
"Our aggressive serving throughout the match helped get Portland State out of system" said head coach Lyndsey Oates.
Offensively, UNC was led by Andrea Spaustat who had 10 kills, hitting .500 for the day. Spaustat added two solo blocks, two block assists, and two service aces to her performance. The two service aces gave her 100 for her career.
"Andre carried us offensively today and they had trouble defending her" said Oates.
The match got started with a set of runs from each team. UNC went up early 7-2 including scoring the first four points. The Vikings responded with an 8-0 run of their own before Timarie Nymyer ended it with a kill.
Nymeyer finished the match with six kills.
Her kill led to an 8-1 run by the Bears behind strong serving from Kim Weissmann, and Makenna Meier. UNC never relinquished the lead after that going on to win the set 25-22.
In the second set the teams traded the first 16 points, until Kendra Cunningham and Spaustat helped lead the charge for a Bears 7-1 run to take the lead for good. UNC would win the set 25-15, holding PSU to .000 hitting.
The final set was the closest of the match with the teams combining for 7 ties over it. Northern Colorado closed out the match on a 6-3 run to win it.
The Bears now move onto the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference Tournament taking on #2 seed North Dakota Friday at 5:00 p.m. UND won their match against Montana in a sweep Thursday morning. UNC and UND split their regular season matches each winning on their home courts.
