Northern Colorado volleyball fell to North Dakota in four sets to snap a five match win streak.
GRAND FORKS, N.D.—Northern Colorado's volleyball team had their five match win streak snapped Saturday afternoon against North Dakota in four sets (16-25, 23-25, 25-20, 24-26).
The Bears (15-9, 8-4 Big Sky) struggled offensively being held to .140 hitting.
"We were not ourselves tonight and that is going to lead to a loss," said head coach Lyndsey Oates. "We have to play smarter volleyball and lacked aggressiveness at times."
Even with the struggles middle blockers Andre Spaustat and Brianna Strong each recorded double-digit kills. Spaustat led the team with 17 and Strong added in 10.
The match was a back and forth affair containing 33 ties and 11 lead changes throughout; on top of long rallies throughout.
The Bears had five different players reach double figures in digs. Junior defensive specialist Meagan Garcia led them all with 25, her third straight match with twenty plus digs.
Sophomore Ashley Guthrie was one of the five Bears with double digit digs (12), while adding on 46 assists for her fifth double-double of the season. Â
North Dakota (21-8, 9-3 Big Sky) took the first two sets of the match hitting .209 and .240 compared to UNC's .000 and .115.
The Bears were able to rebound after the intermission and take the third set. UNC and UND played a costly contested set until Makenna Meier took to the service line. She helped lead a 6-0 run to take the team from being down 11-14 to ahead 17-14. Northern Colorado would not relinquish the lead after that.
The fourth set featured 11 ties, but only two lead changes with the last coming after the teams were tied at 23.
"We will now head home for these last two home conference matches and bounce back to finish conference season out strong." Oates said.
Northern Colorado now returns home to host their final conference home stand of the year. Montana will visit Butler-Hancock on Nov. 6 and Montana State will be there on Nov. 8. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.
