Wrestling Gets First Dual Win Of Year At Stanford Duals

STANFORD, Calif. - In the first competition in almost a month, the Northern Colorado wrestling team posted a 1-2 record at the Stanford Duals to win its first dual of the season. The Bears (1-8) dropped the first two, losing 48-0 to #24 Oregon State and 34-5 to Stanford before bouncing back to defeat Menlo College 35-3.
Freshman Justin Gonzales (149) and senior Justin Tuell (285) each posted two victories on the afternoon, with Gonzales defeating Mike Kent of Stanford, 10-6 and posting a major decision over Menlo's Cody Gibson, 13-3. Tuell won a 5-4 decision over Stanford's Dylan Rush and pinned Menlo's Hanna Malak in 1:31. These were the first matches for Gonzales in a Bears' uniform as he competed in the tournaments in the beginning of the year unattached.
In the match against Menlo College, junior Justin Gaethje won the 50th bout of his career, wrestling up a weight at 165 pounds after competing in the first two matches at 157 pounds.
Northern Colorado begins Western Wrestling Conference action on Friday at Wyoming. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. The Bears are home on Sunday, January 17 against North Dakota State in a WWC dual slated for 3:00 p.m.
