Five Bears Place at Cowboy Open

LARAMIE, Wyo. - In the first full tournament of the season for the Northern Colorado wrestling team, the Bears had five placers at the Cowboy Open hosted by the University of Wyoming. Junior Justin Gaethje brought home a second-place finish, while both seniors Kenny Hashimoto and Justin Tuell finished third. Junior Rocco DePaolo and sophomore Tanner Weiks each finished fourth.
Gaethje posted a 3-1 record at 165 pounds, losing a 3-2 decision in the finals to Wyoming's Shane Onufer, ranked 16th by Intermat.
Hashimoto posted a 4-1 record at 141 pounds en route to his third-place finish. He defeated Chase Smith from Wyoming 10-5 for third-place, winning two rounds by fall, one by technical fall and one in overtime.
At heavyweight, Tuell went 4-1 to finish third including a 2:22 fall over Jesse Boggs from New Mexico Highlands in the third-place match.
DePaolo finished fourth after going 6-2 on the afternoon, losing both matches to Josh Hensley from Adams State. Weiks also placed fourth, doing so with a record of 3-2. He lost in the third-place match to Skye Wells from Western State, 11-8.
The Bears host their annual Old Chicago's Northern Colorado Open on Sunday. Matches are set to begin at 9:00 a.m. at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.
