Kyle Payne came to the Bears in 2011 after earning a degree from UNC in 2008 in sports and exercise science. He was named the head athletic trainer in 2013.Â
Following his undergrad education, Payne pursued and earned in 2010 a master's degree in human physiology from the University of Oregon while serving as a graduate-assistant athletic trainer in the Ducks' high-profile athletics department.
He then completed a year-long internship with the NFL's Denver Broncos before coming back to his alma mater.
At Northern Colorado Payne is directly responsible for the healthcare and athletic-training coverage for the Bears' Volleyball, and Men's and Women's Golf programs. He provides care and oversight during all practices and competitions and implements various therapy regimens, evaluates and documents treatments and rehabilition programs, and ensures proper and timely referral of any athletic injuries to team physicians.Â
Also, along with the rest of the Bears' sports medicine team, Payne instructs, mentors and molds future athletic trainers through Northern Colorado's esteemed undergraduate student athletic-training program.
Payne holds certifications in the Graston M1 technique, from the BOC and the American Heart Association (CPR/First Aid and AED). Additionally, he is a member of the National Athletic Trainer's Association, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainer's Association and the Colorado Athletic Trainer's Association.Â
Payne, from Rush, Colo., married in July 2012 the former Dulcie Stone, a standout for Northern Colorado Volleyball from 2003 to 2008. He and his wife have two daughters, Lyla and Jessa.Â
