In the 2019 season, Haruguchi helped guide Northern Colorado volleyball to its best season as a Division I program. They won the Big Sky regular season and conference tournament championship, while advancing to the program's fifth Division I NCAA Tournament. All of the victories added up to 26 for the season, the most since UNC joined the DI ranks in 2006. Along the way, the Bears won a Big Sky record-tying 17 conference matches and had the regular season MVP, Daisy Schultz, four All-Big Sky honorees and tournament MVP, Kailey Jo Ince. In the 2020 season, he assisted the team in reaching their third consecutive Big Sky Tournament finals. In 2021, Haruguchi helped the team to win the Big Sky Tournament championship and earn their sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament.Â
Haruguchi specializes in coaching UNC's libero and defensive specialists since joining the program. Taylor Els became the programs All-Time, DI leader in digs with 1818 after working with Haruguchi during her four years in Greeley.Â
UNC volleyball has won 73 matches since Haruguchi joined the staff in 2016 and advanced to two postseason tournaments. He has helped coach 12 All-Big Sky selections including the 2019 MVP Schultz and 2018 Newcomer of the Year, Lauren Hinrichs.Â
Haruguchi's first season with UNC saw the team go 18-11 overall and earn its 11th straight trip to the Big Sky Conference Tournament. He works daily with the team's setters, and helped see Ashley Guthrie earn her second straight first team All-Big Sky honor. She finished first in the Big Sky with 11.81 assists per set.Â
He brought over 17 years of coaching experience to UNC with stops at Dartmouth, Louisiana Lafayette and Southeastern Louisiana.
Haruguchi's most recent stop was for a year at Dartmouth where he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Big Green.Â
Before working at Dartmouth, Haruguchi was at Louisiana-Lafayette for five years, as an assistant coach, and being named the associate head coach in 2014. While with the Cajuns he helped guide the program to its best five-year stretch in the past 20 years, including the team’s first 20-win season since 1990.
Â
Haruguchi started his college coaching career as an assistant at Southeastern Louisiana University where he was responsible for video exchange, breaking down file, tracking the player’s academic progress and running the summer camps while also serving as the recruiting coordinator.
Â
A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, he earned his Bachelor of Sciences degree in Ladscape Horticulture from Colorado State in 1996, and his master’s degree in Special Education from the University of Hawaii in 2003. He will be joined in Colorado by his wife Wendee.
