Brenda Vlasak has held several different titles while working for the University of Northern Colorado. She started in 2002 as an assistant coach with the women’s tennis team and was named the head coach for the women in 2004.
In 2005, she added head coaching duties of the men’s team, but relinquished that role in 2010 to Tim Bearman.
Vlasak has taken the team to new heights in the Big Sky Conference. She is also only the second women's coach in school history, as she replaced longtime coach Rosemary Fri in 2004.
The Bears have advanced to the Big Sky Conference Championship five times since joining the league in 2006-07, doing so in 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014. She has also had seven Big Sky All-Conference selections, which are voted on by the league’s coaches.
Vlasak and the Bears closed out the 2014 season while recording program firsts. Her squad started the Big Sky schedule 5-0 while also beating Colorado State for the first time in the Division I era.
In 2016, Vlasak had one of the best doubles pair in the mountain region. The duo of Beth Coton and Remi Immler ranked in the ITA Top 40 nationally early on in the season and finished the year at No. 10 in the Mountain Region rankings. During the season they compiled an 11-8 overall record, and 5-5 Big Sky record.
Prior to joining the Big Sky, Vlasak led the women’s team to the 2004-05 Independent Championship title, which helped her win Division I Independent Coach of the Year honors.
Vlasak spent two years playing at Tyler Junior College, helping the team to a pair of NJCAA titles in 1998 and 1999 at number one singles. As a sophomore, she tallied a 34-5 singles record and a mark of 35-5 in doubles.
Her final two seasons were spent at the University of Arkansas, where she played number two singles and number one doubles. Vlasak was named to the SEC All-Academic team and was ranked among the top 100 according to the ITA.
Vlasak graduated from Arkansas with a degree in kinesiology in 2002. She earned her master’s degree in sport administration from Northern Colorado in 2004.
Prior to Arkansas, she attended Tyler JC in Texas and won two NJCAA Titles.
In 1995 she earned a bronze medal at the US Olympic Festival and in 1996 she won the doubles title at the Easter Bowl (resulting in a top three national doubles ranking).
In 1992 she finished in 5th place at the USTA Claycore Championships which earned her a National Ranking of #3. Vlasak began playing tennis at the age of 5 and in 1990 she was the Girls 12 National Champion.
For her efforts both off and on the court, Vlasak was inducted into the Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame on Jan. 28, 2011, one of four inductees in the 2010 Class.
She is married to Joaquin Gallegos and they have a seven year old son, Keanan.
