Ben Portie is in his third season as the head coach of the women's golf program at UNC.
Portie came to UNC for the beginning of the 2017-18 season. In his first season as the leader of UNC women's golf he helped the team earn four top 5 team finishes and eight top 10. UNC's best finish of the year was third place, achieved twice at the Sacramento State Invitational and Montana State Bobcat Invitational. Morgan Sahm earned All-Big Sky honorable mentions during the season.
UNC saw improvements in Portie's second season as they became more consistent across the whole lineup. The team ended up with two top 5 finishes and six top 10 finishes. The biggest accomplishment of the year came at the Big Sky Tournament where Beah Cruz won the individual title. Cruz also set the program's single round and single season stroke average records under the tooliage of Portie. Cruz was named to the third team All-Big Sky as well.
He came to Northern Colorado from Metro State-Denver where he was the head coach for four years. Prior to being the head coach at MSUD, Portie was an assistant coach for both the men's and women's team at Northern Colorado.
In Portie's most recent stop he helped create and build the Metro State-Denver women's golf program from scratch in 2013. Since then, he led the Roadrunners to a pair of RMAC Championships in 2015 and 2016. The 2015 championship team set the RMAC record for lowest team score at the championship. Not only have his teams succeeded on the course, but off as well. The team led all MSUD sports with a 3.55 GPA this past year, and seven student-athletes earned All-Academic honors over the past two seasons.
Before quickly constructing a winning program at Metro State, Portie was an assistant coach for Northern Colorado men's and women's golf from 2010-2013. In that time he helped coach the 2012 women's golf Big Sky Tournament championship team. With the Bears, he coached seven (four women) All-Conference selections, including the 2012 Big Sky Women's Tournament individual winner, Carleigh Silvers and 2012 American Sky Conference (Men's) Freshman of the Year, Steven Kupcho. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Portie assisted in fundraising, recruiting, and budgeting.
