“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Campbell to our staff, team, and all of Bear Country,” Smiley said. “Coach Campbell brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and will help us tremendously in many ways.”
Prior to joining UNC, Campbell spent the 2022-23 season as head coach at Grant High School in Portland, Oregon. He moved to Grant after spending the previous five seasons at Cleveland High School, beginning in 2017.
During his tenure at Cleveland, Campbell led the Warriors to its first Portland Interscholastic League title in 60 years in 2022. His team went 68-53 over his five years with Cleveland, including 22-6, in his final campaign. In addition to winning the first league title since 1962, his squad advanced to the state quarterfinals. His accolades include coach of the year honors in 2020 and 2022.
Campbell began his coaching career at South Puget Sound Community College as an assistant coach from 2014-16.
Following his stint at South Puget Sound, Campbell began his high school coaching career as an assistant under Marshall Cho at Lake Oswego High School in Oregon, spending two years sharpening his skills before accepting the position with Cleveland.
In addition to his eight years as a high school coach, Campbell’s experience includes 10 years as a skills trainer. His most recent opportunity to pass on his knowledge was as a counselor at the renowned Formula Zero Camp put on by NBA Superstar Damian Lillard.
“I’m really excited for the impact that he is going to have with our players internally, focusing on player development, both on and off the court,” Smiley said. “Coach Campbell has an elite background in developing players and teams, is a proven winner and he is ready to attack this opportunity with our program!”
Campbell attended Oakland Senior High School in Oakland, California. He played two years collegiately at both Monterey Peninsula College and Greenville College.
Upon graduation, he played professionally for the Sonoma County Crushers and Sacramento Heat Wave in the American Basketball Association. His pro career included a stop in St. Johns, Canada, with the St. Johns Mill rats in the Canadian National Basketball League.
