GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado battled Southern Utah to a 1–1 draw on Thursday, August 28, in a non-conference showdown at Jackson Stadium. Both teams delivered strong performances in the closely contested match.
The Bears came out strong, dominating possession early. In the 12th minute, Lexi Tuite netted her third goal of the season, assisted by Brooke Holmberg and Ava Marshall to give UNC the lead. Southern Utah responded in the 53rd minute, converting a penalty kick to even the score.
Despite opportunities on both sides, the match remained tied through the second half. Strong defensive efforts and crucial saves from goalkeeper Maddie Smith helped the Bears preserve the draw.
After the game, head coach Tim Barrera emphasized the importance of fine-tuning the team's fundamentals. "We just have to be better at the smaller parts of the game—whether it's connecting a simple pass, getting on the end of a head ball, putting the ones away in front of goal, or capitalizing on set pieces," he said.
With the tie, Northern Colorado moves to 1-2-2 on the season. The Bears now look ahead to an in-state rivalry match up against Colorado State on September 4 at CSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
