Nevada Wins Series with Big Inning
RENO, Nev. – Kai Wagner homered and Jake King tallied three hits in the series finale Sunday.
Northern Colorado (5-7) fell to Nevada 14-5 at Peccole Park, dropping a series for the first time this season.
Wagner hit his team-leading third home run, driving in two. He scored two runs and drew his tenth base-on-balls this season, the first Bear in double digits.
King went 3-for-4 at the plate, with a double and one run-batted-in. Through the season's first three weeks, he leads the squad with seven doubles.
Tony Castonguay, Carter Monda, Jake Bullard and Craig Kenny registered a knock each.
UNC led 5-1 and needed six defensive outs before Nevada's offense erupted for 14 runs in the eighth inning.
Monda worked a leadoff walk in the first and put the Bears up 1-0 three batters later when he scored on a double by King.
The Wolfpack recorded the equalizer in the second.
Monda opened the third with a double and trotted home on Wagner's home run.
The Bears utilized five pitchers, which held Nevada to one run on three hits over the first seven innings. UNC plated two markers in the seventh and held a 5-1 advantage.
Trevor Landen started on the bump for the Bears and allowed one run on one hit and walked two in 2.0 innings of work.
Wilbur Berrios, B Hudson, Mason Bright and Zach Hose inked zero runs allowed to their respective ledgers.
Berrios surrendered a hit and a walk in 3.0 innings. Hudson faced three batters, allowing a hit, a walk and fanning a batter. Bright retired two, including one via strikeout and walked one. Hose sat the Wolf Pack down in order in the seventh, including one strikeout.
UNC opens its home schedule Friday, March 7, at 2 p.m., against Utah Valley.
